    There are a lot of cool hiking/ camping areas out side of Austin. There is also Tyler State Park which is kinda far though.

    Eisenhower State Park has some great campsites, but that's a haul from Houston.

    IMG_1397.jpg Thanks for the recommendations, went to Huntsville State Park. Got a campsite right next to the lake, fishing dock ~100 yards away. Pretty busy though even for a state park.

    Sam Houston National Forest. Look up one of the many trailhead and walk til your tired, you can camp anywhere 100 feet from the main trail

    I tried that, but a lot of the trees are pretty close together, making it really tough to fit the truck through.
