My A/C compressor turns on and shuts off every 20 seconds.

How would you know, you can't hear or see it while driving?

Just an FYI on this, the 2016-17 Tacoma does not use R134a, it uses R1234yf. Don't use R134a in the A/C system.

It feels like the engine misses.

I'm not sure what you mean by misses, unless you are referencing a misfire but how the heck would the AC create a misfire feel. Its just a pully on a belt..

When the compressor comes on and off is what I'm told.

RPMs may change slightly. Every car I have ever owned has had the A/C cycle like you described. A misfire is more drastic, then engine will clunk/shudder and bog and despite giving it full power it won't go, is that what is happening? The issues may be unrelated.

Couple of things, do you have an auto temperature setting, and is the defroster on. I'm pretty sure that anytime the defroster is on, so is the AC pump.

Let me tell you, my 2.7 knows when the defroster is on.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, by default ac will cycle(will do this wether or not hvac is in auto) when heater is set on windshield defog, I now run it at feet and hands setting, unless it's raining heavy. Not a solution, just what I have to live with.
Op what you gonna replace it with?
Edit: I wanna like this thing given the fact i spent 40k+....I do kinda wish I had gotten a 15 pro, despite it having less interior gadgets

Another thing, looks like the OP has an SR. My 2.7 will hesitate if I go from light throttle and then punch it. I always attributed it to the VVTI changing. It does sort of feel like a miss.

Actually, I have the TRD Sport now.

    I guess it's just normal.

2017 Tacoma TRD Sport here. Had a similar issue to what you are describing. Turns out is was a bent pin in one of the A/C connectors components. It was cycling constantly, but would not blow cool air, and eventually wouldn't blow at all. Does this sound similar to your problem? I can get the full report on what they fixed on mine if it helps. Good luck.

Did anyone ever find a resolution for this? My 17 OR does something similar when it's around 85 degrees outside, constantly seems like it's switching off and on, but when it's 90+ it blows ice cold. Mine doesn't have any "lag" though. Pretty frustrating.

i have owned several Toyota's over the years......all of them have had the a/c cycle at idle.....very annoying......however, of my 4 Lexus's, none of them cycled where it was noticeable at idle..... being a Toyota product, they would probably use the same compressor
