Good Morning, for the past couple of months when I first take my 2016 Tacoma DC out in the morning I get a weird rubbing sound. Sounds like its coming from the front but can isolate it. It goes away after driving for a while? Had the dealer look at it at my last oil change but of course I had driven it all day so the noise wasn't present. The tech told me it "could" be a flat spot on my tire but I seriously doubt.

    Anyone else experience this?

It won't be a flat spot if it goes away. Where is, it most noticeable? Steering colum? More forward than that?

Probably a brake pad dragging? A flat spot on a tire won't make any rubbing sound, and wouldn't happen on a stock tire anyway. It has to get pretty darn cold to "flat spot" a tire, unless you are running some huge super swampers. Even then, it would be a bouncy ride until the tires heat up, and wouldn't make any rubbing noise.

Kevin, a few questions....any lift on your rig? is the rubbing rythmic but not necessarily on each rotation? does it go away if you put it in 4wd?

No Lift, completely stock. It's definitely rotation, I stop and it goes away. I did put it into 4wd and the sound was still present.

What's weird is it only happens when I first drive it after it sits for a few hours and eventually goes away? Could it be something not greased properly?

I'm telling you, it's the brakepads rubbing just enough to make noise, but not pull. The caliper isn't floating like it should or one of the springs on the pad is hanging up. Google brake pad slap. Pretty sure there have been some other threads in here about it. You could try mashing the brake pedal a few times before driving away or slamming on the brakes in reverse really hard and see if it goes away?

ok, that should rule out the CV bearing. I'm leaning towards gottatoy's suggestion of a hung up pad. do you notice it when driving in a staight line or more when you turn?

try driving away while lightly dragging the brake and see if the noise changes sound? Also make sure the parking brake hasn't been bumped.

It's either your tires or your brakes and you can narrow it down fast. Lightly apply your brakes as your first accelerating. This will knock off any surface rust and get the pads moving.

If applying the brakes alters or stops the noise then boom, it's the brakes.

It could also be tires. My work cars sit in a cold parking lot until I need one. I start it up and I drive out of the parking lot and onto the highway at Highway speeds (above 70). When the temp is less than 40ish degrees the first 2 miles are rough. The tires are bouncy, vibrating, shaking and doing good that vwoom vwoom vwoom thing until they warm up.

My 17 with 400 miles just started doing this and I suspect it's the passenger front body mount bushing .

Well after a couple of days trying a few suggestions above I seems to fix the issue. If when I first take off after the truck has been sitting overnight I apply the gas and keep my foot on the brake and let it drag on the pads a bit and the noise almost goes away instantly. I will bring it into the dealer asap to get it looked at because I should not have to do this IMO

I was glad to read am not the only with the womp womp womp or sometimes it sounds almost like a chirp womp rubbing, but it definitely is related to engine/ tire rotation(same noise in 4 wheel or not)and does go away after driving a few miles. But as usual by the time i got to a dealer the noise would be gone, so do I bring it in and tell them to keep it overnight and have them drive first thing in AM to hear for themselves and be inconvenienced without a vehicle for a day?It is a new vehicle and is unacceptable IMO and i will be calling tomorrow to make appt. for next week. Does dealer have to get you vehicle to use? My Tacoma is a 16 SR5 V6 Auto 4x4 Long Bed with just over 10 k and 11 months old. I really enjoy the vehicle,I use S mode in city and highway, averaged 18-19 mpg city through winter, 20-22 mpg highway winter and now starting to see 20.5 city, so can't complain. Only annoyance is this chirp womp rubbing, i will try above suggestions and see what happens. Will keep posted if can get it into dealer next week. Thanks to all who share their knowledge and help us with these vehicles, this is a great resource for all.

My completely stock 2016 TRD Sport has the same issue. Sounds like a weak womp womp womp that's audible usually at low speed while coasting (foot off the gas pedal). And it doesn't go away after driving any distance. It's there in summer and winter (heat and cold). I only have ~6K miles on the truck.

I'd really like to get this solved. Appreciate the assist.

I’m actually having this issue now as well. Just started happening a week ago. I hear the womp womp as I drive. The sound does not happen on every rotation. It’s almost like I hear the sound, drives maybe 100 feet. Then happens again. I tried the brake stomp today but it hasn’t fixed the issue.
It happened right after using a power wash to wash the sand off my truck a week ago. Not a normal car wash. But just a self service power wash. So it is possible the brake pad is causing it, but I can’t tell just yet. Any other suggestions on this?

I am having the same issue. After a general service. They suggested it was my front brakes. They did need to be done. After doin . Still happens. Only cold and at almost zero speed.
