I have about 3500 miles and I get 14-15 mpg in my normal driving. I can seldom go more than a half mile without stopping for a light. The one highway trip I took I drove 70 mph the whole way and got 22 mpg. I don't mind the poor mpg around town as I have about a 4 mile daily commute.

I don't know if your improved mpg is due to break-in or engine/transmission mapping settling in.

Most modern engines use piston rings that are "seated" or broken in within the first hour of run time.

That said, there may be some additional freeing up in the other parts of the drivetrain, but not likely to be enough for a major improvement in MPG.

Is the break in more for the driver to learn how the truck likes to be driving? I am at 3500 miles or so, and just recently feel like my mpg is getting better.

If you bought a Tacoma concerned about fuel mileage then you bought the wrong truck. They are not known for good mpg

I have consistantly gotten between 18-20 and I don't baby it. I do make good use of ECT and S mode. Just finished a 1000 mile trip and got around 19 MPG per tank on interstate driving at 70 MPH. Truck has around 22K on it now.

there will be a little hardware break in but i agree it's not gonna be eating more than 2mpg or whatever. this 'break-in' mpg adjustment is likely more about the ECU collecting data and processing maps... or whatever is going on in there, i didn't design it.

i was at about 12mpg for the first 2-3 tanks, and i've gradually come up to 17-18 with mixed driving. i don't get my foot in it much, i let the Pedal Commander do that for me. so, yeah, my foot is pretty in it. with this kind of mileage i am seriously hoping for a tune down the line. if i'm already paying then i would very much like to play, too.

This was me when I got the truck in January, staring at the MPG meter trying to drive for better MPG. after 2k miles I stopped looking at it and just drove it naturally and saw an improvement.

Also, last 3 tanks the computer was .5 mpg worse vs my hand calculation.

Best not to trust the computer with that. It's a great ball park estimate but it won't give you your ACTUAL read out. Same goes for the speedometer, the computer and the gauge seem to be 1-2 mph apart from each other.

I drive normal and am averaging 25.5mpg. Best yet was 33.3mpg. When my wife drives, she gets about 17 mpg.

It's not so much "driving like a grandma" as it is driving smart. Don't be heavy on the brakes if you are going to be speeding up soon, roll with the hills a little bit, use cruise control especially if your right foot isn't perfectly steady (constant tiny fluctuations make a big difference), etc.

If the MPGs improved it's going to be due to the driver operation, not due to any significant "break in"

    33.3 mpg huh?

The Guage only goes to 30

You should be studied like E.T.

I'm not talking about instant. The trip average is a number, not a gauge.

Edit: here's a pic of my commute home for example

So what mid size truck is know for good mpg? I think for most, they just want to see something in the ball park to what the sticker said these trucks would get.

I find that the truck very easily dips into the high-teens MPG if you aren't super careful with your right foot. At the same time, I don't try very hard at all to average 25+. Hills, traffic, stop lights, etc. are all part of my commute.

I've had my 4x4 DCSB OR for a couple of weeks now and have filled it up twice and got 20mpg both times. That's mixed city/highway driving and I live in eastern TN. Lots of hills and curvy roads on my daily commute. In contrast I drive a 2014 2wd short bed single cab GMC Sierra everyday at my job and I'm lucky if I get 19mpg out of it.

at this point I'm really wanting to see numbers of AT vs MT trucks on average. a new truck getting 20? i haven't seen 19 yet in 6k miles and i don't totally drive the crap out of it... just some of the crap out of it. but seriously, is this a 4.30 thing?

My 08 and my 15 both MTs average about 19 overall, I would expect the 3rd Gen numbers to improve over that.
