Any of y'all figure out a way to move your backup camera to your cap's third brake light?

Seems like it would be badass to me. I've run across some third brake lights that have cameras built into them in separate systems but I'd like to integrate it into my stock camera and move it up there. The increased height would do wonders for visibility.

To be specific, my idea is to mount the camera beside or in the middle of the third brake light on my leer 100xr.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

 

I think so far the manufacturers are only doing that if you intend to use the truck for a goose neck.

I love seeing my bumper and I get really close to my garage door with it. A roof camera wouldn't do me much use in any situation.

 

I meant putting it on my caps third brake light. You'd still be able to see the bumper, just probably the whole thing since you would be higher up and further away.

 

Ooooh I missed that. That would be neat with the higher angle. Especially with a fish eye lense.

 

Yeah! I think it would offer great visibility of the back of the truck. I also plan on having a bike rack on the back of the truck a lot of the time so it will block my view from the stock mounting location.

What I'm thinking would be perfect is if there was a way to do a quick disconnect on the wiring so I could remove the cap still, and then replace the third brake light with one that had a camera in the middle of it or a way to mount one. That or rig up or 3d print a mount location beside the light.

Have you pulled the lense off to see what it would take to mod it yourself? I doubt the factory camera has enough wiring but it should be easy enough to either splice some in or buy an aftermarket camera and adapt it. My real question is would it be possible to wire in both cameras and have them on a switch to change between the two. That way, if i take of the cap or one is better for a situation than the other, I could swap between them

 

which the more i think about it, the more i think that yeah, it wouldnt be too hard. I would just need to make a switch box to run both cameras into, then have the output going to the connection to the head unit

 

Yeah, there's a guy on here who used a multi-position switch from Radio Shack and had multiple cameras that he could bring up on his head unit. I'll see if I can't find the thread.

 

Pretty sure I saw that earlier. Not the clean install I'm thinking about but the same idea kinda.

Did you find a 3rd brake light with a camera that fit? Switch box?

The Jason one looks like a close fit, but hard to tell from pictures...

 

Hey! Sorry for the delayed response, haven't been working on this project for a while, but your comment got me thinking about it again. I think what I'm going to try to do is use the Pelfreybilt relocation brackets and mount it underneath the third brake light. Seems cheap, reversible, and like not that much trouble other than lengthening the harness to run it up to the top of the cap. I image the bracket will need to be bent some to point the camera down more and that it will likely be that I won't see the bumper anymore, but my bike rack is in the way anyways so I'm not too worried about it.

Figure it's worth $30 in parts and an afternoon of beer drinking and soldering wires.

My third brake light is double side taped down to a flat spot in the fiberglass that seems like a perfect place to screw that bracket down underneath the light. I doubt that the light will put off enough glare if its behind the camera to cause much issue, but thats the only problem I can imagine coming from this project.

 

Any luck on this?

 

I haven't gotten any further on the project. Kind of got sidetracked with other stuff, but I like one of the previous poster's mention of a switch box. I think he may have been talking about something like this from radio shack ($19):

I like the idea of multiple cameras to a head unit...back up cam up high, one for the hitch and maybe one out the front...

 

Holy crap, Radio Shack is still a thing? Nah, the one I remember used a rotary style switch with like six positions. Ex.

October seems like a good month to resurrect this thread from the grave. I am in the same boat as OP and looking for a clean solution. Bike rack blocks the factory camera; thinking a birdseye view from the shell would work well. Anyone solve this?

 

Never done it, and just now seeing this thread, but I would think doing something like the anytime front/rear camera mod, and just using the "front" option for the cap mounted camera would do the trick. Then you could have access to those cameras anytime. As for camera choice, use whatever you like best I suppose.
