For the same price, and the same size, you can find plenty of used Ruger P- series pistols in 9mm and 40S&W. I'd much rather have one of them bouncing around in the truck than a High Point.

They are ugly and big. I have shot the 9mm. It went bang just like the others. I have heard it said somewhere that there are plenty of dead gang members that can attest that they shoot just fine. If you are going to get a high point product look at thier 9mm carbine. It is a surprisingly good firearm. If you want a pistol take a look at Bersa pistols. I have the thunder .380 for a CCW and really enjoy it. They are not expensive either. It picked mine up used with 2 mags for $230.

The ones I'm most familiar with are the 85, 89, 90, and 91. Big, bulky pistols that are fairly cheap, ugly as hell, but work.

States that still allow some freedoms let you buy a handgun at 18. CA though?

I'll chime in here and say although this will be your buy, understand what you are getting into. Hi Points are CHEAP. That's the only good thing I have to say. They are known to be big, heavy, and "reliable" with little maintenance but i would stay clear. It's not anything I would let anyone I care about carry or use for defense so I will pass that to you.

As many members have stated, firearms are investments and when made right, you only need one or two. Save some money and find a used Glock or something similar if they aren't your flavor. You can often times fined factory refurbed G22s for a good price with a warranty. Seeing that you are in California you are kind of limited by the politics and the "roster." If you are persistent about a cheap buy, look into a used Xd or the Smith & Wesson SD series. I'm not a fan, but I do hear good reviews from the SDs from people who have them.

You're also 18 so you have a few years before you can legally buy a pistol. Key term is legally. With that said, I almost bought a Hi Point as a joke and fun gun. It's something you can laugh at and enjoy with buddies, but I would not consider it as a serious option.

The only way you can legally get this firearm is from a parent/guardian who "gifts" it to you (at least that's the way it was when I lived there).
Some states you can buy from a non-ffl at 18 however in Ca everything has to go through an FFL, except possibly "gift" from a parent/guardian.

I would not describe California as one of those states.

If you practice as much as you should, your ammo expenses will exceed $700 per year, esp with the slightly more expensive .40 S&W caliber. So don't fret too much between a $300 pistol and a $500 pistol.

Cost of shooting is something to consider. When the 40 first came out, I was pretty excited about it. Power of the 45 in the capacity of the 9. Great! Got a Sig that shoots great. I've never really liked it though. It seems I prefer the power of my 45s or the capacity of my 9s. Doubt I'll get rid of the 40, but I don't think I'll ever get another. 9s are a lot cheaper to shoot.

The hipoint carbines are fun to shoot and reliable. The pistols however are anything but. I watched one come apart in a shooter's hand. Don't waste your money on that junk.

He's being facetious. 11A states "Are you the actual buyer/transferer of the firearm? Could be considered a straw purchase if the intent is wrong and a good enough attorney is brought to the table.

The only Hipoint I will recommend is their carbine.

If you really want a great inexpensive truck gun or for most other duty, go for a Canik TP9SA or TP9SF. They are very inexpensive, they are very reliable, and they have a really really good trigger. I got a TP9SA for a truck gun and an Hk VP9 for my main carry, but over time, I found I was shooting my Canik more. I sold the Hk, and now the Canik does my full size duty[IMG] while my G43 does my regular concealed duty. My next Canik will probably be a TP9SF Elite Compact.

Saw this today... I hate that missed the bus on talkin u out of a hi point but i still feel i need to post. A good middle ground may be taurus btw. They have came a long way over the years... Im not sayin they are as good as a s&w but i would say that 90% of people wouldnt be able to shoot noticable better with one than the other, also i would say that FTF would be near identical between them too. They make a pt111 that u can find for less than $250 and it comes with 2 12 round mags... Also available in a .40 but i have heard that since it was a 9mm they scaled up to a .40, it isnt as strong as it ahould be really.... Of course i really wanna help u to just buy a .357 mag and be done with it
