Will do! I have a trip coming up the end of this week into next week but should be free for a bit after that. I did post up on ENH but haven't really kept up on it. It seems i always have a weekend work trip whenever they plan something.

I haven't decided what to do yet on the rust subject. I know many people do the oil thing and it works well from what ive seen but i dont have any first hand experience with it.

Sounds good, call me next week. I just got my truck back from coating. I'll let you know how it works. The way this winter is coming in... I might not really get to test it out!

Congrats. I think if I ever get rid of the FJ it'll be for an 80 series, maybe a nice 100 but the 80s are cooler IMO.

Did you find it locally or on Mud?

Thanks! I found it on Craigslist in Portland... then found it again on MUD. It's not the prettiest rig, but the install should be totally solid. I'll post some specs below.

Man, I wish I had some! It's sitting in Portland OR at the moment. My dad test drove it and gave me a review. So, I bought it sight unseen! This might be a genius plan... or a total disaster! Should be fun either way.

    Here are the interesting specs:

    Engine: 115,000 miles
    Chassis: 160,000 miles
    • 1HD-T in very good shape - replaced most ancillary parts and cleaned up. Runs flawlessly with 475 compression across all cylinders (@torfab can confirm)
    • Professional conversion by Torfab
    • Freshly rebuilt Grunter Turbo - not the extreme version - just rebuilt by G-Turbo.
    • A442F Hydraulic Automatic transmission from Wholesale Automatics (complete rebuilt unit, not just VB) with lockup in 3 and 4 - imported from Australia
    • Heavy Duty Torque Converter from Wholesale Automatics - new from Australia
    • Custom 2 ½” exhaust (Probably with one too many mufflers because it has a turbo.
    • Airdog II filter/separator
    • ARB front and rear lockers
    • Center Diff Lock
    • Freshly rebuilt injection pump (at DFIS in Portland)
    • BEB’s were replaced by previous owner
    • Rear ARB bumper
    • Complete Old Man Emu suspension kit, about 3/4" lift over stock

      • Factory AC
      • New timing Belt, pulley and water pump
      • New Front and rear main seals
      • All fluids and filters are new and mostly Toyota brand (i.e. red Toyota coolant)
      • New tranny fluid
      • New dual batteries, Sears Diehard Advanced Gold AGM
      • New IsoPro gauges for: Oil Pressure, EGT’s, Boost
      • Slee headlight wiring harness
      • New Window seals and new OEM motor installed in driver’s side
      • Have OEM replacement motors for all 3 remaining doors
      • Speakers are Focal brand all around.
      • Wilson switch wired up for glows.
      • Reverse camera wired up and ready for a double din stereo.

Now... I've got to find a good way to get it shipped to New Hampshire... Any ideas for where to look for cheap and reliable shipping?

I fly out to WA for work sometimes, so that might actually work out. Really, I don't feel like driving all the way across the country though... especially burning vacation time to do it. If I could get it shipped for around $1000, I would totally do that right now.

Also, I got the one picture that matters for you. 1HD-T!!

Congrats on the new truck! I second the fly and drive method, but not if you have other plans - gotta be into it in order for it to be enjoyable.

I remember reading your thread a couple years ago when I joined the site but never was really able to apply anything I learned with my 2wd 2nd gen. I'll be going through it again now that I have a similar truck to see if I can get any useful tips.

Now that you're within spitting distance to where I grew up in central Maine I suggest you check out the Moosehead region sometime - hundreds of miles of dirt logging roads and long forgotten trails. Also if you're interested in other cultures be sure to check out Quebec City in the summertime. The sun sets pretty late up there and there's a lot of cool things to see along with a beautiful coastline nearby in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI. Newfoundland would be awesome too.

That's an awesome house also, btw. I saved the link to the book that has it in it - I like reading about old things. Looking good out there on the east coast!

Thanks man! My dad takes custody of the 80 today. After that, we still need to figure out how to get it here. Right now, work is so busy, I don't know if I'll be able to get time off. But, if they fly me out to Seattle for work... maybe I'll start driving back on a Thursday evening aiming on arriving on Sunday night.

So... tell me more about the Moosehead region! It sounds like a great area to explore with the family! I was hoping to visit Newfoundland but I don't know any cool, outdoorsy destinations out here. I'd love any specific suggestions you have!

Also, thanks about the comment on the house. If I get time, I found a picture of it taken in 1905. I'll throw that up with a paragraph talking about when it was a tavern from another book.

The latest adventure was my first New England "Nor-easter". We got over 3 feet of snow! My $165, 39 year old snowblower sure came in handy!

Here are a couple pics of the Landcruiser:

It's not pretty, but it is very solid diesel swap:

Man I love your bumper with the removable winch plate - I'd love to have one like it on my 98 since carrying a winch around just adds weight and not much purpose 99 percent of the time when I'm around LA. I do want one when I'm out in the middle of nowhere though. Any suggestions based on yours?

I was a high school kid the last time I spent much time around Moosehead Lake - the largest lake east of the Great Lakes, but I'll give you the rundown on my experiences up there with my family on summer vacations:

Greeneville is where we would enter the area and head north from there. At some point we would have to pay for being on logging land. It was usually pretty cheap, but got more expensive as I got older.

From there we would go north to a variety of places, here's a brief list of the most scenic / interesting / camping friendly:

My great uncle has a camp on Moosehead in North East Carry, which is about as far north as you can go on the lake. It would take about 2 hours or a little less in good driving conditions from Greenville. In between there are a couple cool places:

My cousin worked at a lodge at Kokadjo as a cook for awhile.

Big Spencer and Little Spencer Pond are places you can camp and canoe / kayak at.

Similarly Little Lobster and Lobster Lakes are great places to camp and canoe / kayak. Little Lobster is nice and remote so you can get away from the "crowds" (there weren't any when I used to go there and maybe that hasn't changed lol).

Well these crowds of people my dad hated (read one or two vacationers we'd see in a few days) got to be too much for him and we headed even further north than Moosehead to Caucomgomoc Lake where we'd kayak from Loon Lake into Caucomgomoc. This place is awesome. There's a huge amount of driftwood at the end of Caucomgomoc that's dammed up. My brother and I spent a good afternoon jumping from one log to another with our hearts in our throats after we saw huge green leeches with red spots swimming below us in the water lol. There's a campsite right at the dam and you can swim in the runoff.

Other than that I know that Kineo Mountain is a super cool place to see. There was an old lodge up there that was supposed to be a year round resort that people would fly to from Massachusetts that kind of died out in the 1900's.

    http://baharris.org/historicpolandspring/MtKineo/MtKineo.htm

I remember a guy had his 15' boat at the dock there one year when we were passing through there. He accidentally hit the throttle and the boat flipped end over end after running up the side of the dock. He was alright. I don't think my brother or I will every forget that.

There was also a moose that fell off the cliff one time - I think it was found soon enough that they could eat it if I recall correctly.

Those are the best remembered places of mine. The nightlife is pretty quiet if you can imagine up there, so for fun after the sun would go down my family would drive around on the roads and try to see as many moose and deer that were getting away from the flies in the forest as we could. On a good night we'd see four or five moose and a few deer. All this was in the 90's, but I don't think it could have changed too much since then.

You definitely have to check it out at least once if you're in NH and see what you think.

This is great information! I am definitely going to check out that region this summer! How do you pay for access to logging land? That sounds right up my alley.

As for my bumper, I still really like the basic design of my removable winch plate. It makes for easy install/removal. It was pretty easy to build too because the OD of the smaller tube (1.5" in I believe) fit the ID of the larger (1.75" I believe) perfectly. The winch doesn't move or rattle at all when installed. But, you need to keep it lubed because of that tight fit. (otherwise you have to really shimmy to get it off!)

Access is controlled by checkpoints. You just have to pay the fee at whatever checkpoint you enter at. It's cash only iirc, but only a few bucks. If you plan to camp you also need to tell them where you plan to do so. Not that you actually have to stay at said spot, but they want to know.

Almost forgot to mention, I got my truck stuck again this weekend. This time it was just pulling off the road at the cabin. Background: The cabin got 40" of snow over the last week or two. Then the weather turned warm... 40s and 50s. So, there was melting snow that, on the bottom, was compressing into ice. I was over confident and pulled off the road like so:

    20170219_105515_zpsgxwecdef_10f42042541c13cbfcc622ff3fbd50a811f556a8.jpg

I thought I'd back up a bit to make sure I had solid ground before parking the truck for good... no go. All 4 tires were spinning. I dug under the truck so I was no longer high centered. Now the snow under the tires was almost glassy ice. So, I pulled the set of cheapo traction mats from the civic and gave them a try:

    20170219_111401_zpsbpp2uazr_2c098ccd25c7bbc24b024cfe4978200527c164e0.jpg

Those things worked like a charm, once again! So far, Costco mats are 2-0! Expensive TREDs are 0-1. (But TREDs were being used to help some lady in a Mercedes who floored it and shot them out the back of the vehicle... I guess I can't blame them)

Had to use 4 low to get out of the driveway the last couple of days! Grabbed some pictures of the Tacoma and Landcruiser next to each other while I was out. The Landcruiser needs some aesthetic help... the Taco looks much cooler when they stand next to each other.

In the process of clearing snow, I broke my snowblower. So, I borrowed my buddy's trailer and snowblower. I didn't even notice the trailer back there, when I was towing it. Good torque out of this diesel...

Hey man! Yeah, I lived in CO for the last 9 years but moved to New Hampshire last summer. I miss the Colorado scenery but got a job opportunity that I couldn't pass up!
