Hi all, I have a 2007 PreRunner, and I noticed recently that if I have to brake hard to come to a hard stop, a few seconds after stopping I feel a very hard impact coming from the drivetrain, such that it seriously feels like I got rear-ended. I never felt this in the first 9 years of owning it, I assume it's the transmission downshifting into 1st gear incorrectly. Any experience with this, recommendations, expected repair cost? Thanks...

If transmission fluid is low, what other impacts would I notice? Seems to drive normally in all other ways, and I haven't noticed any leaks in the garage.

it's most likely just axle wrap from worn out leaf springs.if you have stock leaves then it's time to think about replacing them

Thanks -- transmission fluid was flushed and replaced 1 year ago, but I'm having the leaf springs replaced (under recall) Monday, hope that's the fix ...

Leaf springs replaced, unfortunately the phenomenon persists. I actually don't need to come to a full stop to experience it, if I decelerate hard to a few mph and then immediate try to accelerate I can feel it, though not as severely.

I had a recall on my leaf springs. I used to feel a bump after I would hard brake. Felt like some hit your back bumper

Hey OP, I had bought a 2008 Prerunner and had a similar issue. Upon hard braking at times and coming to a stop my truck would jump forward, I'm not talking about light lurch it was pretty harsh, at times i felt like it would lurch into the back of someone. I knew that wasnt the axle wrap issue, took it to toyota and the guy tried to tell me it was a driveline which i knew was way off. I left and had the same issues, eventually it threw a code and i had it pulled. Code was for a shift solenoid issue. took it to toyota and told the same guy the problem and they verified it , under warranty i ended up getting a brand new transmission. I'm not saying its going to cost you a transmission but definitely be eyes open to more than just axle wrap!

Take your driveshaft apart and grease the slip yoke. They really need a grease zerk there.

Mine used to do the thud after a stop, greasing the slip yoke has taken care of it. One of these days I'm gonna either add a jerk or maybe do a tom woods 1 piece driveshaft.
