I went to the grocery store today and put some of my stuff on the front seat and apparently triggered the seat belt sensor.

My annoying seat belt signal kept going off and it took me a good 10 minutes or so to figure it out. I kept undoing my seatbelt and redoing it...I even opened and shut the driver door. Signal would not go away.

Finally I got the bright idea to fasten the passenger seatbelt...and it finally went away.

So my 25 lb bag of rice and several other items got seatbelted in for the ride home o_O.

I feel kind of silly posting this but I hope this helps someone.

get a carista blue tooth adaptor and the app plug it into the OBDII wiring port and shut the passenger seatbelt chime off. You can do a lot of other things with the app as well. I've used it on about 10 peoples cars now to change setting for them as the dealer was going to charge them a small fortune for it. well worth the 50 bucks. You can get other adapters as well.

    Passenger seat occupancy detector maybe...
It tells the system wether to blow the passenger airbags incase of an accident rather than blowing everything. You tricked the system to thinking someone was in the seat.

IIRC, the carista unit only does driver's side chime disable. Passenger side can't be altered.

Odd as I used it to shut mine off on the passenger seat side.

I'll check mine again later. Only did driver side. Maybe I missed the passenger side option.

Perhaps the software was upgraded on the app and it won't do it anymore? I'll have to check mine as well. I just know mine no longer beeps when they have the seat belt off.

Gotta be. I go through this when I have to pick up trophies for the 2 leagues I run.

It's working properly, so yes just connect the seatbelt. I usually have to do that anyway so I don't have 2 foot tall trophies rocking when I stop

Not being sexist but I get a lot of complaints from female customers that stick their purse in the seat and don't know about the occupancy detector. I don't work for Toyota but I see no reason why it would be too much different

The funny thing is when I picked up the 25 lb bag of rice and put it in the seat I was thinking "this bag is the size of a small child."

I never thought it would trigger the seat belt sensor. My newest car up to this Tacoma is a 2004, so auto's have come a long way with all these sensors.

My 75 lb dog is going to have to ride in the back access cab...and she likes to be the boss dog up front, so that will be interesting when she gets her first ride in the truck.

In my FJ, a 12 pack would set it off so its probably similar in the Tacoma.
I'll have to run to the store and test it out, brb.

I think to be sexist you would have to work the "b" word in there. Then again I'm not sure what the rules are anymore.

Then again the world seems to get bent out of shape on stuff that doesn't matter and then no one can communicate anything.

I've seen those. I bought a large pet compartment divider thingy that keeps dogs from going from the back seats to the front seats.

I plan on testing it out and I'll post pics.

At my age this especially irks me.

I've had 2 of my cats on the seat in my '10 and not set it off, so I bet your rice was just in the exact right spot unless the 3rd gen weight is less.

Nah I mean a seat belt buckle, my bad..that buckled in would disable the sensor and let your dog sit there.

The chicken-shit part of my brain usually considers this a handy feature.

If it weighs enough to trip that sensor, then it weighs enough to cave my skull in during an accident. So it should be secured (seat belts make okay cargo straps for short trips) or kept somewhere other than the passenger compartment. and the little chime reminds me of that.
