HA! Then why are you here telling people it's a pointless swap? I don't get it. Seems rather pointless. I might as well join a Ford forum and tell people they're all idiots for buying Fords. Not trying to argue. I just enjoy trying to understand psychology of different people since everyone's different (which is a good thing).

I love diesels, especially Cummins, however that 2.8 weighs the same as a 2UZ-FE (500 lbs)and makes less torque and hp. A 4BT is 250 lbs more.

Someone really needs to start producing a swap kit for us like the Honda guys have for K's into B or D series cars.

V shaped motors are likely to produce more HP, simply because they're probably going to run much higher RPM's. The torque produced by the 2UZ is probably at a high RPM, and probably has a sharp peak. Whereas, the R2.8 makes 267 lb*ft from 1600 THRU 3200 RPM !!! That is insanely flat! My 5.9 cummins and my LBZ Duramax are like cats and dogs. The Cummins grunts around but doesn't scream down the highway, whereas the Chevy will get up to 80mph in a hurry. Both great engines, but different design completely and different pros/cons.

If you're going to drag race, mud bog, or live in an area where Diesel is 3x the price of gas, the 2UZ is probably a great option!
If you're going to be doing rock crawling, dirt hill climbs, slow speed road driving, towing, or just want the efficiency of a diesel and live where diesel is plentiful, then the R2.8 will be a great option! And don't assume that by "efficiency" I mean paying off the swap. Some people like not having to stop for fuel every 150 miles.

As far as making a kit for the 2UZ...I'll leave that to the gasser guys. I'm really already stepping out of my bounds by messing with a common-rail. My M.O. is building EMP-proof vehicles. The R2.8 will be screwed! But I think that if I shove an R2.8 in a 2wd 5spd w/ 3.3 gears and the R155, I should be able to pull ridiculous mileage, and show the U.S. that the auto makers are a bunch of idiots for not bringing a diesel to the market place like they've had in Australia for decades, when I'll be doing it with an emissions compliant motor and making better mileage than anything they (Toyota) offer today.

hey anybody ever try the vw diesel conversion in a 2nd gen tacoma? I seen a guy that had one in a first gen tacoma and he bought everything in a kit and swears he's getting 30 to 40mpg but i cant seem to find anything on the second gen kit. Just wondering if anyone seen or herd of it or if its a waste of time. I have a first half 2007 dodge 3500 6 speed with the 5.9 so I have other mean when it comes to towing......lol.. and i dont think i could ever afford the 4bt conversion that i would really want.... any help would be great thanks

What ever happened with this swap kit? Sounded like a cool idea to have another emissions legal engine option for the tacomas.

Cummins told me they'd be giving an update after Easter. EPA testing is taking longer than expected. They really want to get this engine approved higher than 1999, and I do, too. At least 2005, if not 2015. That way all 2nd gen Taco's will be covered.

Over seas makets the Toyota has the Hulix. Nothing more than a Tacoma. The Hulix comes with a diesel motor as standard. What diesel motor it is, I do not know? But I do know the Hulix is bullet proof! I hear in the next few years the Tundra will have a diesel in the American Market. That would be something to consider with my next purchase.

After doing some extensive research on the Hilux engine and transmission options in Australia a couple weeks ago, I found that the Hilux comes with the same size diesel that puts out more power, and comes factory from Toyota. Which makes me think that for 8 to $10,000 for the engine swap, plus the cost to rebuild your high mileage transmission, it would probably be more worth it to simply source a front cut from Australia and do a bolt in swap.

    Isn't there a 2nd gen hilux diesel that's a direct bolt-in for the 2tr-fe with a 5-speed manual?

If I remember diesel toys discontinued putting custom D4D's in 2nd gens, they are doing their own thing now where you have to buy a whole truck from them

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.

Do you ever wonder why Toyota doesn't offer a factory diesel option?

Not enough interest to make it worth the cost. They won't make money.
