It's been around for awhile, they are just now getting around to enforcing it.

Wish we could make sure these funds only go to 4x4 trails.

Not when it's the same sticker that the motorcycles/atv trails also use.

I still consider that 4x4, my thought was $ into CO general fund. So we would be giving them the funds to "fix" trails as needed but they continue to close them, etc and spend money on whatever.

I'd forgotten about West White Pine. I was sort of assuming they were still waiting on funding or scheduling to repair it, and because it was dead-end it was low on the priority list compared to things like Old Flowers (which still took a couple years). Pierson I didn't realize / think about. I've hiked up Twin Sisters and knew that the slide had impacted the road you walk on, I just didn't realize where, if anywhere, else it went or put the two together.

I think a large part of what got STT involved was the roads vs trail thing. Or more specifically, the lack of consistent application and enforcement of the rule. You had BLM rangers in one place saying/doing one thing, and then USFS rangers somewhere else going another route for what was essentially the same type of road/trail. On top of that was the different agencies have different classifications. I got the impression STT was trying to step up and push for clarity and uniform application/enforcement. The sticker as applies to plated vehicles was just something of a side effect. I mean, the only reason I can see them pushing for enforcement of just that is more money for grants for the kinds of repair/improvement/creation projects that they do/spearhead. The fees and laws and all that are government, it's just STT as a private organization/partnership is/would be trying to take advantage (in a positive way, not a negative one) programs in place to help with their cause of keeping trails opened and maintained.

One of the things I find interesting about the whole situation, and a large part of the confusion about where the rules apply, is that it's a state fee collected to allow use on federal lands by way of pass through regulation. Theoretically BLM and USFS could give two shits about this fee or having to enforce it, since what they're actually enforcing is their own rule that operation must be compliant with state laws - not the actual state law (ie, fee) itself.

Also, good idea spinning up a dedicated thread. I'd actually been thinking about that night before you posted and was going to see if it might be worth pulling the posts about this topic from the BS and Upcoming events into their own thread. If someone who can actually do that thinks it's worth it ( @sean266 ) or maybe just the larger 'informative pones) then:

Upcoming events starts at: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/upcoming-colorado-events.187907/page-744#post-14296067 and runs three posts into the following page.

    BS thread starts at: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/colorado-b-s-thread.131441/page-5794#post-14297188
    and runs through
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/colorado-b-s-thread.131441/page-5797#post-14298713
when it dies for a bit. Comes back at:

    through
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/colorado-b-s-thread.131441/page-5812#post-14318031
between me and icehorse, then goes away again until

    through
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/colorado-b-s-thread.131441/page-5863#post-14424291

Of course when I say 'through' I mean with varying amounts of other stuff thrown in, it is the BS thread after all. :D

And if you don't think it's worth it... then hey, there's always this post people can refer with. :p

So I started my little mapping project today, even though I still have other things I should be doing. Also, what a way to kill a Saturday. :anonymous: I didn't think what I did was going to take that much time. And I'm not even done yet. So far I've located all but two of the USFS trails. If anyone has any idea where the hell Sims Mesa trail 6115 or La Plata Canyon Full size trails #791-798 are, let me know. I still have to look at the BLM trails, because those are in a different data set... the ones that are available anyway, not all the districts have data yet. "Coming Soon."

Man, what a mess. I'm not sure what STT's data source is for that list, but I suspect it's at least in part looking at MVUMs for each district. And I think someone didn't read the Paonia one right because there are a few listed trails/roads that most definitely should not/do not require a sticker. As well as some missing ones. And some of the trail numbers on the MVUM are how they appear on the STT list, but in the USFS data they're missing the first digit (like 897 should be 8897). Also, some of the names on the STT list don't match what's on Trail Damage (like Italian Pass = Reno Divide, Brush Creek = Pearl Pass). And forget names in the USFS data - the only one there was Jenny Creek, everything else was blank and only identifiable by road/trail number. Unfortunately as far as I can tell, there's no way to identify these roads as a group in the USFS data, so they have to be pulled out one by one.

I've got a new list/spreadsheet I started based on the STT list, but I'll wait to put that out until I've done the BLM stuff. STT sorted alpha by name instead of geographically, and there were some other things I thought could be improved or make the list more useful, like splitting out some stuff they grouped together. Their list is good for a web page, not so much for us data people.

Looked at the USFS data using ARCmap and it is very difficult to follow. What are you using to put your map together?

Problem with the USFS data is it's coming from individual units, and while they're all supposed to be following a standard it doesn't quite look like they're there yet. Ton of duplicate records, lots of missing info (like trail names), gaps in trails, and I would have expected at least one of the fields would have had a common value for all the trails in question - at the very least the one that controls what symbol they are on a published MVUM - but that isn't the case. The BLM data is just as bad in different ways, though at least they include a symbology file.

I'm using Arc, though I'll probably export it as kml for distribution, since I'm not running a map server or anything.

Well, that took longer than it needed to. Kept having stuff come up and only being able to work on it here and there. But here we go...

First, the disclaimer. I make no warranties express or implied to the accuracy or applicability of this information. I am not responsible for how you use, or especially misread, it. Use at your own risk. This is the disclaimer. I am disclaimed. Don't try to sue my ass.

Second, sources. All of the lines shown in these files are taken from data provided by the USFS and or BLM unless otherwise noted. The initial list and information regarding trails was taken from Stay the Trail as linked above. They also have a really convenient map page that links to both USFS districts and BLM offices so you don't have to hunt them down on your own. If you start at the below links along with Traildamage and Trailsoffroad, you can find everything I used to compile this information.
    https://data.fs.usda.gov/geodata/edw/datasets.php?dsetCategory=transportation
    https://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/BLM_Programs/geographical_sciences/gis/GeospatialData.html
    http://www.staythetrail.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=266593&module_id=247561

Two files are provided. The first is a spreadsheet version of the list. The second is a kmz file you can open in Google Earth or whatever app you like that supports them and will show the lines on a map. Line segments in the original data have been merged into a single line for each trail, and they may have gaps or not be in quite the right place (I didn't create the data for the USFS or BLM, and I chose to mostly use exactly what they had with no modification). The spreadsheet provides information for all of the trails in the list, while trails I couldn't find or believe are incorrectly listed are not included in the kmz file. Beyond that, everything you see in the spreadsheet should pop up if you click on the line in the kmz file. Including the notes column, which you should pay particular attention to.

The spreadsheet uses a bit of color coding. Cell highlight - Red means I couldn't find or locate that trail, and there are six of these (though one of those is actually eight trails). Orange means I can locate it, but it's either the same as another trail, doesn't match the description, or I don't believe it should be listed (again, see the notes), and again there are six of these. Green means I've got it shown, but do note in a couple of cases like Tierod Bender it might not be correct. Well, maybe more than in a couple of cases, but hey, garbage in, garbage out. The red numbers are just the trail identifying number STT lists that don't match up with the government data. Usually just a case of a first digit missing (8801 vs 801), which even the official MVUMs might do in terms of labeling.

This is a milestone point for the project for me. Next, if anyone can offer help or clarification on some of the issues identified or missing trails, let me know. I'll probably try to contact STT if/when I get a chance and get in touch with whoever created their list in the first place to try and resolve some of the issues. So if you know who that is, or anyone else there, introductions/connections are appreciated.

Not a lot of views... so if formatting is the issue, here's a jpg and a pdf. But of course they're just going to be general overview and not able to see detail.
