Checking for actual wires is on my to-do list. So, no... And yes I did check motion sensor lights (we have two)

Today I worked on the timber work that supports a 10' x 12' roof overhang outside the back door

The post is an 8x8 and the beam(s) is 2 / 4x12 that notch into the post . All timbers are #1 FOHC DFir .

The post sits on a knife plate we poured into a 10x10 concrete column

This is a pic of the knife plate and column from the day we poured

I used my Makita 16" electric chainsaw to plunge the pocket for the knife plate

After plunging the knife plate pocket I test fit the post overlength and shot and marked its height with a builder's level

Next up I laid out and removed the "cheeks" from the posts that will house the beams

I drilled countersinks for the washers and bolts and drilled through holes that allow the bolts to go through the post and through the corresponding holes in the knife plate , fastening the post bottom to the concrete column with 2/ 5/8"x8" galv bolts

Next step was to get the 4x12's up there , plumb everything up , clamp the assembly tight and drill through bolts similar to the ones on the bottom , this time using 5/8"x10" galv bolts

The beams are still about 18" long , I'll cut them to length in place on Monday and we'll frame the roof that sits on this assembly

Is there any movement, with the exspansion of Steele or wood? Looks good, just wondering if the two materials play well together?

No problems , its a pretty standard timber to concrete connection around here

The post in the knife plate?...it would be easy one way with tightening the bolts...the other way would have to be shims or wait till you tie in the tops.

The knife plate was pretty plumb , the chainsaw pocket is tight in thickness but a bit oversize in width , the through holes I drilled in the post are 3/4" , the bolts and holes in the knife plates are 5/8"

You have to lay it out pretty accurately

It's standing plumb in both directions

When you pour the back deck concrete....do you pour right to the bottom of the wood?

The top of sidewalk will be about 4" below the bottom of post / top of column

I build shit like this for a living.

    IMG_0352.jpg

Oz knows his shit. It's nice to know there are still actual "tradesmen" out there.

The shit he does is way different than what I do, enjoyable to watch his thought process. I have questions all the time but I've learned over the years it will explain itself out.

He can build my dream house anytime.

I found a guy that's actually about a mile down the road that does timber framing. I'm trying to be friendly so I can see his shop.
