so when i dynode my truck you could clearly see what your talking about. there is a massive dip in the power band. I can get my truck to do it pretty often but I have noticed it is more apparent when the engine is cold. its between 3 and 4k rpm in 2nd gear or 3rd and its like the engine is loosing power between 3 and 4k rpms then you kick into a power band and the truck takes off. not sure if if has something to do with the fuel injection or valve timing. Either way it is poor tuning by toyota. there is nothing wrong with the truck i believe thats just how they all are. It is just not as apparent on the autos.

I thought the manual transmissions weren't supposed to have these issues.

My M/T does this. Only in the cold. Mostly in lower RPM

Of course this engine runs non linear. It is running 2 injectors per cylinder. This is best video I could find. Didn't your local toyota salesman explain exactly how this engine runs to you when you bought it? Hahah ya right.

Emissions emissions emissions that is why your right foot is so sad. Also if you don't try to drive the truck like a hot rod you'll end up getting fairly good mpg.

I have noticed this same problem with my 2017 TRD Pro M/T. BUT the lag goes away when I turn off traction control. It seems to me that the truck's traction control programing controls your acceleration so that you don't slip, or burn rubber on dry pavement. It does this without telling you with a dash light.

To turn off traction control you have to hold down the "swervy car" button (over your head) for a lot of seconds (like 7ish?) until the traction control off light on your dash turns on.

My son and I call this "race car mode".

Truck shifts and performs much better if you wind out each gear. That's the benefit of the MT. At least we can do that.

I do agree, it's just hard to do in 30 mph zones.

I have similar behavior in my M/T when quickly rolling on the throttle at low speeds in 2nd and 3rd gear. It seems most pronounced when pulling away from a stop slowly, then accelerating harder. I put it down to the Atkinson-Otto cycle switch-over. Going from light load to heavy load.

Don't let RPM's fall below 2k outside of 1st gear. You do not want to have to make a relatively quick pull in 2nd gear at 1-1.5k RPM. It just isn't going to happen. The truck has zero low end torque.

After a year of ownership, I typically shift around 3-3.2k RPM for normal driving, and cruise between 2.5-3k RPM. The truck makes max torque at 4k RPM and max hp at redline, you just need to sit closer to the powerband and utilize it when necessary.

Not sure I could get used to that after owning a 4.0L Tacoma and 4.0L Frontier back to back.

Yeah it's not ideal and I really wish the truck didn't feel like it was going to die in 2nd gear at 9-10 mph, but that's just how it is. Aren't really any other options anymore in the mid size market that come with a manual transmission and 4x4.

The engine choice still doesn't make sense to me for a truck, but at least with the manual transmission you can work around it easier.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice this. My shifts are so much smoother and does not get the lag. You are right though you have to fully shut the traction control off. It is like a secret sport button.

This is how I drive and shift also. I still see a mpg range of 16 to 20. So even though you keep the revs up mpg does not suffer. After all I am lifted with bigger tiresc and around 650 pounds of armor and tent on the truck at all times.

Bummer. 2nd is very useable in my Frontier. If there's a slight decline or im rolling at all I don't need 1st. The dual mass flywheel probably helps but it's also a Pro-4x with the factory 265/75R16s and 3.69 gears.

One of these days I'll have to test drive a 6MT 3.5L Tacoma. It's a sea of automatics everyone I drop by to look.
