Does anyone know of a rack-mounted ethernet switch with the ports on the back? There are plenty out there with the ports on the front but I need one with the ports on the back (long story).

Hey Salty. Take a look at Netgear's web site under the Home section. I don't know if you want a POE switch or not, but there are some there that have all ports on the back of the switch. Most of the smaller Netgear switches (fewer ports) have their ports on the back, but are not rack mountable. An option you may want to consider is buying a rack mounted shelf and then set a smaller, rear port switch on it. Good Luck!

 

Actually, it IS for home use. I have a small server farm and about 5 workstations scattered about my house.

 

I want to say the racks we used at IBM you could put a switch in either direction, or the tabs were switchable on the switch.

 

if it's for home use, why not just put the switch in backwards? I doubt the air flow difference would be huge.

 

That's what I'll probably end up doing.

 

Yeah I mean, in a datacenter it makes a big difference, but for less than a full rack at home you probably don't have a hot/cold aisle or specific airflow requirement that's going to be impacted by putting in a switch backwards dude

 

I do have a dedicated window air conditioner in my computer room separate from the house AC.

 

That's dedication lol, but I still stand by my statement. Depending on what you get, I mean if you're getting a huge 48 port Cisco device then yeah it may be more impactful, but even a 24 port one shouldn't do too much. You could even leave a blanking plate on the front side to act as a baffle maybe if you want?

 

If you're using just a rack I would mount the switch backwards but with a standoff to offset the depth and make it easier to cross connect if you're not leaving any rack units between devices. If using a cabinet with rails on both sides than this whole question is mute, and just mount it backwards. Unless you're running a HUGE data farm contained within a closed cabinet your air flow shouldn't be affected.

 

Happened to have a 24-port Catalyst 3750G PoE within arms reach. It does indeed have spots for screws to mount the arms toward the back instead (the two diagonally opposed holes match the ones on the front side):

You're nuts. I work IT by day. Know what I have at home for PCs? One laptop, and it's just a lower end ThinkPad. I don't want to mess with that stuff when I'm home.

Me too. Years ago when I was working on getting my MCP I figured what better way to learn about networking than to build your own network? So I did.

 

I used to have a 2008 domain controller at home "just because". Microsoft used to give away server Datacenter to anyone with a .edu email address.

No more, though. One laptop is plenty. If I ever got into doing anything more involved at home again, I'd probably build up a desktop and get a few monitors again. But right now I don't have that need.

 

I'm the same, took a break for like 5 years at home just macbooks and an xbox360. About 2 years ago I got the itch and built a new desktop and got a couple monitors so I can play games again, but I have such a hard time trying to lab stuff up and things at home, I prefer when things just work when I'm not at work. lol

 

Anybody running Windows 10 Professional? If so, do you have a problem with the mouse stuttering and being jerky when you try to move it? Apparently this is a known problem and I've tried many "fixes" I've found online but nothing seems to work.

Any thoughts?

 

I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit on a new system that will be booting to an NVMe M2 drive. NVMe M2 drives were never created when Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit was created. Please don’t tell me to use Windows 8, 8.1 or 10, I don’t want a Virus or spyware on my system, Windows 7 is bad enough. So I need to Boot from a USB drive, this requires me to put the Windows Image on the USB drive, done. And then the driver for the NVMe M2 drive, done. Then the driver for the USB for the Motherboard, done.


Here is the problem, I need to figure out how to get them into the image file so when I boot it work.


Has anyone here done that? Can anyone Help? If So IM Me please.

 

Can you install it to a regular hard drive, then Ghost the image to the USB?

 

I will burn in the fires of Hell for all eternity before I switch to a Mac.

But actually, I found a fix. The mouse dongle needs to be plugged into a USB1 or USB2 port. If it is plugged into a USB3 port (which mine was) then you have the jerkiness problem.

Once I switched it to a USB2 port, the problem went away.
