If you had the noise, you wouldn't be dismissing it as a minor issue. It's a 400hrz tone. YouTube that frequency and listen to it on 45 in your truck. Report back about how it's just "annoying".

I do have the "noise". It sounds like a flute. I've already stated that.

Please be sure to not mistake the "wind noise on the lower control arm holes" issue for this rear diff whine. They are completely different. My truck makes both noises but the control arm thing is very intermittent and dependent on just the right speed and crosswinds. It doesn't even really bother me, I've had the corrective plugs on my workbench for a month and haven't even bothered to put them in yet. The diff noise is never intermittent it always happens when feathering the gas between 50-60 mph. The speed may vary a little from truck to truck but you will always hear it under the described conditions.

Could not be happier with my 2017 Tacoma OR. It is my first truck and always wanted one. If I wanted a smooth quite ride I would have bought a Honda ridgeline or a car. I do not worry about the noise and it does not bother me. I am confident in Toyotas quality and not worried.

You may be hearing something different, the rear end howl is quite distinct and does not really sound like a Flute.

Its only happened maybe 3 times as stated. Sounded like a deeper LCA wind noise but still flute sounding

I've had my 2016 OR MT since June and have 5000 miles on it. Diff has howled for what seems like the majority of those miles. I tried changing the fluid and it may have made it a little quieter but I'm not sure about that. I try not to worry too much, it's still far less aggravating than the issues I had with my last 4 F150s that I owned (2004, 2011, 2012, 2013) overall I'm still happy with what I have for now.

Only 400 miles on my 17 DCSB TRDOR, and I've read entirely too much Tacoma World. Between the tranny stuff and now the howl, I'm listening to every jitter and jar. But that said, I love this truck. First new taco, and have always been impressed by Toyotas reliability. Even reading a lot before purchase, I'm still placing my bet on my Swamp Pumpkin (Inferno red/orange)

I have 20k miles and have had my truck for 11 months. It's always there as most of my work commute is 55mph. Annoying yeah but eventually you get used to it and I always drive with the radio on so it's not a terrible issue. I love driving the truck too.

After having the T-SB-0077-16 performed and the trans fluid level adjusted at 460 miles, and two weeks ago having the T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 performed at 5125 miles I'm really happy with my 17 SR5, and I have had no other problems with it. To all of the people who think that their trans is working ok, If you have not had it done I highly recommend having the T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 performed.

I love my truck. Has its issues, but don't all vehicles. Got her in September and she has done nothing but look better and has impressed me on her capabilities. Only thing left is longevity. My 2nd Gen was 10 before her early demise but was looking to go another 10 or more. Love my 3rd gen, point me to the fan boy room. :bananadance:
