I can only tell you what I know: the federal government mandates all fuels at all octane levels from all suppliers have detergents.

But a group of auto manufacturers including Toyota got together and asked gas suppliers for higher detergent fuels across all octane ratings then listed them as toptier fuels. They contain much more detergents

However Shell nirtro 93 premium was claimed by Shell co to be the only gas supplier that's premium fuel above could keep a new engine new and clean up to 65 % of deposits on old engines.

Independent engineers plus shell engineers ran tests and shells claims were proven true.

So for me it's worth the extra money as long as I can still afford it. If my annual driving mileage went back up to the 26 to 31,000 I used to do I surely couldn't afford it. I'm trying to keep my mileage to under 15,000. I use another high mileage car in warm weather. Dannyblues

Second reply. Then why does the Toyota manual say to use 87 octane or higher? What does higher mean? Maybe just don't use less than 87 or use higher than 87 but not less when you don't have access to 87. Remember Toyota sends vehicles worldwide and maybe other countries don't have easy access to validated 87 octane fuels? Just a guess at their fuel minimum statement above. Dannyblues

Ok I understand the delayed ignition so as not to get pre ignition or engine knock as they call it and that's why there's an engine knock sensor.

But doesn't premium fuel also have the ability to generate higher horsepower on a vehicle capable of its efficient use?

It was suggested that even though I believed ( in old school thinking ) to read about variable valve timing etc to learn about how that 11.8:1 compression ratio is achieved. Apparently it's not like the posted compression ratios of old.

Just like the claimed horsepower ratings of the 50's and 60's changed. Their claims were not for actual hp going to the wheels but rather changed to engine only hp not Bhp ( brake horsepower as I understand it which is hp at the wheels dannyblues.

I certainly can believe that!! Four cylinder with five speed manual driven in winter with no AC in a very conservative manner at no more than 60 mph only on a highway. Absolutely!!!

I have a 2016 TRD sport 4x4 double cab with V6 and six speed manual on 17 inch wheels, new OEM Firestone destination LE tires and I've gotten as high as 22.2 under the exact same circumstances.

Best of luck with your Tacoma. I didn't buy a four cylinder for the same reason you are unhappy with. Slow!!! My friend griped about his 2nd gen being so damn slow with an automatic and 2 WD. Dannyblues

Thanks man. I love the tires in Iowa winters. There are just as smooth and quite as the oem ones. I was pretty surprised by that

Then I guess my understanding is as follows: premium fuel does not in and of itself contain any properties to put a gain in hp. It's the engine design etc that has the potential for a certain hp that's designed to burn premium rather than regular. Burning regular in a premium fuel car will engage the knock sensor to compensate for the lower grade ( hotter burning too early ) lower octane fuel and then reduce available hp in it.

Does that sound close enough to right?

What tires did you switch too? Winter only or all year round. My original Firestone destination LE tires aren't off road or aggressive looking but they are quiet enough and we haven't had a bad winter here in the New England, at least here in Connecticut. I've only used 4 WD a few times so far. No problem!!! Truck stops too better than I would have expected. Only one panic stop and it did great. That modern ABS plus the computerized front to rear brake load balancing in a nose dive really works!

Had ABS way back when they were first available on my GMC Pepsi van. They were terrible. Noisey. Lots of brake peddle chatter. And at times dangerous.

Let me give you a scenario: Coming down a fair hill in NYC that was all rutted I used to be hauling ass. Then in the old days before ABS I'd hit the brakes hard and lock em up. The vans wheels bounced up and down off and on the rutted ground. But with the brakes locked everytime they hit the ground the tires would squeel to an eventual stop.
With the new ABS the wheels wouldn't lock up!!!! Essentially I just kept rolling without enough traction time on the ground for the ABS brakes to stop before I blew right through the next intersection! Had to slow down on rutted roads and hills after that.

I don't doubt duplicating that same scenario on that same road today would be any better ( unless they repaved that busy road.. lol - are you kidding.. pave a road in NYC?!' ). So I watch for bumpy or pot holed roads where I might be forced to stop quickly. Depending on my TRD suspension if those tires bounce on rutted roads I'd expect the same results. Dannyblues

Did the mpg drop because of the tires? Quiet huh. That's a big plus. Dannyblues

    P. S. I just had to replace the OEM Firestone that picked up a huge metal spike from the dealer. Gave me a discount. $139 for the tire. They also have an ongoing sale- buy three get Fourth free. Dannyblues

I average 19 in mixed driving and have a tank or two where I've gotten 21. On the highway above 70 it uses more fuel.

Similar to my 2016 TRD sport 4x4 double cab with six speed manual transmission. I've averaged as high as 22.2 on mostly the highway under 70 mph and conservative on the throttle. At times I'm way better than that. 30 plus mpg but by the next full up the average drops to about what you are getting. We have unavoidable hills here that kill the mpg.

But the TRD pulls hard and fast even on a long 9% upgrade. I have yet to see how it performs with a 1000 pound load or when towing. I did get the towing package. Who would want to buy my used TRD without a towing package? When someday I trade up to an exact duplicate ( unless they produce a fire engine red one or dark forest green metallic maybe; mines black ) Dannyblues

Here's a question for anyone. Have you ever actually filled the tank with 21 gallons or close to it? I've filled up maybe 5 times since owning my 2017 and the most I've squeezed in there was 17.5 gallons. The miles to go before empty was @ 30 the last time

I have a 2016 TRD Off road 6 speed manual. I get 18-19 consistently on non-winter gas. That's 2/3 highway and 1/3 city driving. On winter gas, I was getting 14-15 consistently. The sweet spot on my truck is around 50 mph. If I go much above 65 mph it drops pretty significantly.

There's a healthy reserve on the Tacoma if you go by the fuel gauge. It's a lot better to fill up to early than too late.

17mpg mixed with my MT. I'm fine with that since it runs on 87 and I save 30 cents per gallon. my cars I was getting 22mpg mixed on 91.
