Here's a picture of my Tacoma with max off road camp load.
10 gals of gas, 12 gal water, the ammo can has heavy recovery gear, hi-lift, heavy ENGEL cooler, full camp kitchen, etc. The weight really added up.

I have OME Dakars in the rear. With this load the main leafs are solid into the 1st overload leaf. Probably only have 3 or 4 inches of travel left. My last trip to Jawbone went fairly well. In the slow speed technical trails like in the picture, the load helped with traction and articulation. But on the faster desert floor dirt roads bottoming was difficult to avoid. Coming over the back side of the dirt humps for redirecting water is usually good for a hard bottoming even going slow. This is the issue I would like to improve

If this load was a regular occurrence I would simply put on OME AAL and revalve the shocks for the new spring rate and all would good. But this load only happens about once a year.
Usually I'm off roading with an empty bed and small cooler. With no load the rear leaf are a little stiff and articulation is not so good. Teeter tottering on 2 wheels is not uncommon.

So an AAL is my last choice. Here a few other ideas.

Most everybody says airbags. I'm not much for them because I don't think there quality is up to 4WD standards.

A hydraulic/air bump stop from ICON or FOX. When I do some eyeballing under there to see if the bump stops would fit it looks really tight. Anybody see hydraulic/air bump stop on a 1st gen? Pictures would be great.

My favorite idea is ICOM 2.5 shocks with remote reservoirs and compression dampening adjusters. The ICOM 2.5s have 20% more compression at the end of there travel and with there adjusters maybe just the fix. The 2 biggest obstacles are an ICOM custom build and relocating the shock inward about an inch. Big PITA. Maybe over my fab skills. Haven't seen a kit that did not sacrifice the spare tire.

So I'm open to any ideas especially if someone is already using the idea.

    Thanks

I really like this solution. Fairly easy fabrication, plenty of room in that area, little effect on articulation and keeps the spare.

You also changed my mind about an air bag. If I can find one with 10" of extension this would be an excellent setup.

    Cheers, thank much.
