I need to do the same thing to my 2012 rc 2wd, except i need the drum pads replaced too. I've changed pads and rotors before, but how much of a pain is it to change the drum pads. Or should I just let the dealer handle it?

It can be a real bitch if you do not have the tools.

They're not too bad. O'reilly's has the special drum brake tools that make the job a lot easier. As long as you have the patience and want to learn you will be alright. Tip of advice is to just do one side at a time. Pull the other drum off so you have reference to see how it goes together.

I put a set of those on my 08 Tacoma but used the KOE137 kit. Absolutely loved them ! I just traded that truck a couple weeks ago and those rotors/pads had about 20,000 on them without any issues whatsoever !

They aren't super hard to do and there is quite a few youtube videos out there that can help if your new to changing out drum shoes; Do purchase a new Hardware kit for the rear drums; its usually very cheap 6-12 dollars at most; this will include new springs and everything you need to replace the rear shoes with. You can reuse the old springs and installation hardware but I recommend against it since its just so cheap to replace them. I sometimes damage the old hardware when I remove the old drum shoes off.

You might as well do them yourself. A- you gain experience and the knowledge for the next time around and B- you save money. :)

Dealership priced rotors and pads at $220..isn't that a bit excessive?

Unfortunately, there is no one-stop shop for obtaining all the brake hardware from 'sponsor worthy' brake vendors at a good price. I normally put in an order to Autoanything, Amazon, possibly Tirerack, and Ebay-storefronts to guarantee I get the absolute lowest price on brake hardware and fluid. The cost is that it usually takes 1 week for all the hardware to arrive from 2-3 different sellers.

I tried using that Wagner crap from advanced auto once - if you don't care about how a car feels, then this is the hardware for you. This kind of hardware will go bad in a year and will have terrible, imprecise stopping performance.

How long to the OEM brake drums go until you need to service them? I've done the fronts but I don't think I've serviced the rears and you can't just look at them to see how much pad thickness you have left...
