My truck is a six speed. I wonder if it would handle the added height any better than the auto.

It may not bother you. I had already planned on 4.56 gears and had them ready to install when I bought the tires.

I know some folks with 6 spd that run 35's with 4.56 gears wish they installed 4.10 gears for better highway cruising.

That's pretty cool for the tire size you have.

Have you had to do anymore trimming? Now that you've had these for a while and have properly tested them out? Any firewall modification?

I had to bend that pinch weld over and also clearance a small amount of the metal fender behind the flare. As others tried to tell me, the wheel offset, width and not using a spacer makes a huge difference in what you have to cut out of the way. I first had pro comp 17x9 wheels and a 1.25" spacer (to clear the calipers up front) and like they said the scrub radius is increased and you have to trim more. Now with the 17x8 SEMA wheels (ebay) I don't need the spacer and don't rub up front. the back will lightly rub the fender flare if I flex it hard like crossing a deep ditch diagonally. Also, like other have said these are a lot of tire for 3.73 gears. I wish I had the cash flow right now to do the 4.56"s but I just use 4th instead of 5th until I get on the interstate. I was doing in the neighborhood of 85mph today at a casual 2500rpm with the stock gearing.

Believe it or not I have one of these mounted in the factory spare location. It's a very tight fit, about 3/8" away from the diff housing.

You need a build thread! Thank you for all the informative posts, I think this is the tire size I am going to run. Looks like I will have a fun adventure ahead to make these fit!

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but how are you guys with the 285/75r17s feeling about your power and MPG with em? I'm looking at ridge grapplers and the difference between the two is 11lbs/tire, which has me a little concerned.

I have the terra grapplers, steel bumper, and bed rack. I can still easily get 16 mpg.

I regeared to 4.10’s so power is fine for me; mpg probably dropped a little bit I have a heavy right foot and haven’t actually calculated it.

FWIW, if I had an auto I would have gone with lower gears. I would go 4.30 minimum and maybe 4.88 depending on intended usage of the truck. I have a heep for crawling so I kept my gearing slightly high on purpose.

I have a supercharger and ovtune so my power and mpg probably doesn’t compare to NA trucks.
I felt a difference in power, but not too bad. The super probably compensates a lot for that though. My mpgs stayed pretty similar overall in my average fuel consumption. Stop and go got worse, but highway saw an improvement. The one thing about this tire size is you may find your stock brakes have to work a lot harder than they had to on the stock tire size. I installed 2012 4runner front brakes (caliper, rotor, pads) and it was a very nice improvement in braking. I no longer worry if I would be able to stop in an emergency situation.

This looks really good. I hate it when wheels.tires stick too far out past the fenders.

I have been looking into getting 285/75R17 but have never bought aftermarket wheels before and finding the proper BS and offset kind of intimidates me.
I have a 3rd Gen Tacoma and these wheels seem like a good match.
Thanks for your input. This thread was interesting to read.
