Hi guys had some questions that I have been searching for some answers on. I am currently in the process of doing a 4wd conversion on my 04 prerunner using a 96 4Runner for a donor. The 4Runner has the ADD front diff and I'm wanting to convert this to manual hubs. Does anyone have a parts list required for this? I know I'll need the CV axles for the manual hubs as well as the hub assembly. Will I also need to find the wheel bearings or could I use the ones that were on the 4Runner? Just not sure what would be involved in the process or if it would be easier to utilize the ADD and hook up all the vacuum lines.

I haven't done the swap myself, since my truck already has manual hubs.
I've read that you need the spindle from the manual hub donor truck, as well as the CV and hub assembly. I've also read that you can use the ADD spindle, but need to press out hub components from it and press in manual hub components. You are better off starting with all components from a manual-hub Taco.

Hopefully, somebody with actual experience can chime in here.

Hi @O4frankenyota, if your donor front differential has a locker, you DEFINITELY want manual hubs so you can completely disengage the front diff when you're not using 4WD. Bonus points for using a 4Runner as the donor, that means you've probably got 4:30 or 4:56 gears to swap in. Even without a locker in front, I'd personally rather cruise junkyards looking for manual hub parts than spend days trying to figure out electrical and vacuum line bullshit. Or kick it 2017-style and cruise junkyards from the comfort of home: http://www.car-part.com/

The wheel bearings in your donor 4Runner steering knuckles won't work. You can either find used steering knuckles from a Tacoma that was born with manual hubs, or get your 4Runner steering knuckles rebuilt with manual hub sub-assemblies and wheel bearings. This requires a shop press and a special Toyota spanner socket so most people don't have the ability or desire to do option #2 at home. I tried to include all pertinent ADD-to-manual info in my swap thread, but please feel free to hit me up if you have any questions!

Thank you sir! And great right up. From what I can tell though the 4Runner should have 4:10 gears. It didn't come with factory lockers so I based that info off of other post I've read that it should have 4:10s. I've read the runners that come with factory lockers have 4:30s. I have 4:10s in my prerunner rear diff so I'm hoping this is the case so I don't have to change my rear gear as well. I also looked up the code on the door sticker and the code matches mine on the 4Runner. Does this sound like I'm on the right track?
