I remember years ago, boy time sure does fly, it's been like a decade now, anyway, I was on the take down team for the pervs that showed up to meet with an underage girl.

To Catch a Predator was the name of the show. We would wait/hide outside the house until the perp tried to leave. Then take them away and wait for the next pervert to show up.

Worked that op twice, that was enough for me. It was DISGUSTING seeing all those sicko's.

I started the transition several years ago from network security/boundary protection to computer crime investigation. Loved the fraud cases. Really loved the criminal cases - they were FUN to hunt down and figure out what was done and how.

Caught one child porn case. Dude was also a foster parent. Had nightmares all throughout the investigation. Dropped my resignation immediately after it concluded and happily went back to the network. BTW, dude was convicted, reduced in grade to Airman Basic (from TSgt) and sentenced to 10 years' labor.

Got forced to do another investigation a few years later (male officer having sex with their female enlisted subordinate), but had to tell the JAG that they had already screwed their case up by failing to get the right warrants prior to seizing the accused's personal laptop computer (with NO chain of evidence custody, either!!). I was "informed" that I was wrong and that I would conduct the investigation anyway. I outright refused without the correct Federal wiretapping warrants. This went round and round...until I showed the JAG the actual laws regarding it. Turned out our JAG was a National Guard real-estate lawyer, and had no criminal experience. Exactly as I predicted the case was thrown out for contaminated evidence. The Lt received a "letter of reprimand" and denied promotion to Captain (which effectively kicked him out a year later).

Since 2008, no more criminal investigations. Malware forensics is good enough for me, and let's me sleep at night.

I had grand jury duty one year. Most of the cases I heard had to deal with kids. Way more messed up people out there than most people realize.

 

I hear ya.

I was called into court on an attempted murder case. Even the youngest witness, 12 year old boy, had already been arrested for drug and ammo possession.

Craziest part was the "victim" had been also arrested months later, drug dealing within 200 feet of a school, and if the shooter was found guilty the victim would probably end up in the same jailhouse once he was convicted.
