Maybe I knew that and was subtly pushing towards your skid plate ;) Or maybe I had no idea at all :anonymous:

If your bored, look up "The Bessemer Process" for how steel is made. Basically it becomes brittle when very cold. It's how the steel was processed for the Titanic. Oddly enough I worked for a sheet metal company a few years ago that was owned by a man with the last name Bessemer. So I asked him about it and his Great Uncle was the founder of the steel Bessemer process.

I don't remember off the top of my head. You'll have to ask the specific vendor. Like I'm pretty sure RCI's don't work.

    Like, so many.
I think a cut out for oil changes would be a big plus. I've been looking at the RCI, but Mobtown looks awesome too. I think I'm leaning toward powder coated steel.

I appreiciate that you want to help your fellow members, but there's a problem; you said most are incompatible but you can't name a single brand that is incompatible. If you can't back your statement don't make a statement. There's already a ton of misinformation on this site and it perpetuates the cycle causing noobs to ask the same questions over and over again.

I'm not going to do the legwork for OP and look at every skid plate offered and make a spreadsheet listing which ones are compatible with a diff drop. I'm merely posting that so they can be on the lookout for that when shopping for a skid plate. I know for a fact there are skid plates that don't work with a diff drop because I came across that issue when shopping for one awhile ago. I'm so terribly sorry I can't name them off the top of my head.

If you had left it at this I would not have called you out, because you are correct some skid plates are not compatible with a diff drop and some, like BudBuilt, have spacer kits to make them compatible with diff drops.

I have RCI's, just let Josh know that you have a diff drop, he'll include the proper hardware. I've run mine and have had no issues, install was easy. Take a look at how each vendors plate mounts, some IFS skids use 4 bolts, some 6. Some are wider than others. Shop around and compare.

^^^^ @JTM1 would you look at that. The one that I mentioned off the top of my head was correct in that it won't work with a diff drop unless you contact the vendor for extra hardware.

    Lots of sail boat fuel

Great reference. I can appreciate another guy who knows his metal history.

I'll be buying a plate relatively soon from you guys. I'll report back but I'm sure it'll do great and I'll have nothing to contribute that somebody else hasn't said.

With that being said I do have a bucket of hard facing rod just sitting in the rackbody....overkill? Haha

Welders. We can over engineer anything.

On my last 2 trucks, I just stayed with the factory skid and beat it back straight/ painted whenever it got bad. It's damn near impossible with the new Toyota ones, as they have too many curves. I replaced the factory OR skid with a 3/16" steel one from RCI and never looked back. I've had it on since August and it's really nice. The weight difference is minimal (sub 20lbs), as you also lose the 2 support brackets that sit behind the factory skid. It was a 30 minute install.

Look in you area of reasonable driving for used skid plates, maybe even someone who's willing to ship. That's what I did, I would've loved to have had the Mobtown skids, but I got RCI's used that had never saw anymore than road debris.
