Has anyone with the howling rear end gone into the rear?

Not sure if this has been stated but if it were bad gears or bearing wouldn't it howl all the time and not when feathering the throttle at a specific speed? Again, I am not familiar in the area but just curious if that would make a deference. Mine does not howl, 2,500 miles.

    Sounds about right.

You could also add that pretty much all new 3rd members that were installed as a corrective measure began to howl as well (read: new diffs in stock have not been corrected yet).
Some were done twice and ended up with the same problem!

No. The needle bearing failure for instance only shows symptoms at certain speeds. But it's been verified time and time again what the problem is and that there is in fact a design flaw there and the solution is to replace with a bushing. So symptoms of a problem can in fact be speed specific.

Yea, it would be nice if it happened before the powertrain warranty is up!

I'm banking on the fact that if they decide to put out a fix a few years down the road--as long as you have a strong history of documentation about it, then you can still get somewhere with them

    Agreed.

As someone else eluded to earlier, the rectification of this issue may well be tied up in red tape, up to and including legal issues, with a sub-contractor (ie the asshats who manufacture/assemble the diffs). And you can bet the bean counters have had more than a few looks at how much a fix would cost them. My guess is that if Toyota does fix this, the "improved" diffs will start rolling down the pike in new trucks without so much as a whisper. I expect there will be a TSB eventually, and someone on here will get a new third member that's "good". Then we'll get to see the paperwork complete with codes n such.

    Yeah, it's a long shot.

Edit: And don't forget, there's got to be 10's of thousands of these things in production/shipped/in warehouses etc. You think those ones are going to be quarantined as non-serviceable and sent back to the supplier? No way. In the new trucks you go, production isn't going to stop.

    In the mean time, :burnrubber:

No doubt about it, whatever Vendor is making them surely has a stockpile that has to be used up before a fixed version is released.

Add me to the list of those with howling rear ends. At 20k miles my 2016 DCSB OR MT howls like a bitch.

Does it do it when you put it in neutral, I notice when mine is in neutral you almost can't hear it. I'm think most of my noise is coming from the Manual Trans.

There was a new TSB for the Manual Trans for vibration noise or something like that, 1 guy on here had it done and it did not help with the howling.

I don't know if Smitty posted it in here, but in the main thread he said he put a mild lift on the truck (possibly correcting the driveline angles) and the howl is gone.

The howl does not happen on Sport or Limited diffs?

I recorded the noise and measured the frequency. I then calculated the ring and pinion tooth meshes. The recorded and calculated frequencies were within 5 Hz of each other.

Not enough backlash can do the same.
