I found these sites and couldn't find any info on them on the forum. I'm sure some of you will find them useful.

DIY shops are slowly popping up in every city, and they make servicing and modding easier for those of us with the skills to work on our toys.

I found these (2) shops in the Los Angeles area, the main attraction for me is the access to the lifts and some specialized tools I don't have room for at home. I'm thinking about using a DIY shop to install my lift kit, maybe some of you on here would like to join me and have a 'tacoma lift party'.

If you used one of these, please let me know what your experience was like. If you know of other similar shops, please post them up so we know about them.

Not in CA, but I used one in Kansas City a few years ago. was in an extended stay hotel for 3 months for work. great wheeling in the area, so I obviously had to repair damaged parts or make modifications between trips. I had all of my own tools, but they did have work benches full of stuff. I think it was like $8 an hour for a bay with a lift. great experience.

Over the years I have seen these places come and go.

It seems most either get turned into Quicky Marts or knocked down and the property sold for big dollars

I always wondered how it works if you would have one of those problems for what ever reason the vehicle is unable to be moved for several days does the clock keep running till it is finished .

In this day of getting the wrong or parts failing out of the box .

I used to work at a shop so I had lift access on nights and weekends, but I moved and don't have that luxury now. I've asked a couple local shops but they don't seem interested. I really wish one of these businesses was around. Once you use a lift, you don't want to go back to a creeper.

The lifts themselves aren't that expensive. If my driveway was level and had some extra room...

    A thing or two...
I heard of a place like this in Albuquerque when I was living in NM, but I never checked it out because I lived an hour away. My last landlord in NM owned a body shop, and he would let me use his lift if he wasn't using it. Now I work on a military base and can use the lifts at the base hobby shop. They have an overnight fee if you have to leave it.

When I was stationed at Ft. Bliss, we had one on site. They had hourly and daily rates. The guys working there were retired mechanics, they loved to talk, maybe slowly you down and get another hour rental out of you, but they offered lots of good advice. If I remember right, basic tools were free rental and specialized tools were a couple of bucks.

I am sure a private shop not on a base, would be more, but for some retired mechanics it would be more about being needed than the money.

There has been a news article about a motorcycle place, like this, that lost a zoning battle and had to move. Their new shop has a coffee/sandwich shop and a thing a small parts store. Ingenious if you have the money to start it up and find the right location. The liability insurance has to be super high!

I've used Sin City DIY Auto Repair in Las Vegas. Their model is they are a regular shop but you can schedule time on one of their lifts. They schedule their work around the DIY folks. Have special carts of semi crappy tools for the DIY crowd but will lend you any specialized tool in the shop when you need it. Nice folks and nice to have lift and air tools for some jobs.
