Let's not debate I4 vs V6. I want a 2.7L. Been eyeing local inventory using the web and I've never seen a new 3rd gen (16-17) Double Cab (DC) I4. Why is that?

There are I4 DC in CA, and nearby cities between CA and AZ. I've also found I4 DC in Texas and NM.

The easy answer is, buy it there, drive it back, and enjoy.

But I kind of like to get it locally, even if I have to drive a few hundred miles. Is there a reason why...this configuration is not being stocked by the AZ dealerships? Emission reasons?

When I did ask my local dealership, he tried to sell me a V6. Again, nothing is wrong with the V6 DC. I just want an I4 DC. He never answer my questions and I get calls all the time wanting me to take a V6 off the lot. Yes, Tacos do sell fast, and new inventory comes in. But no I4 DC.

Any knowledge you can share would be helpful.

I think the real question you should be asking is why does the Tacoma not come in 8-cylinder

Probably because weight to power ratio, a DC 4 banger would be the weakest. Shit I already feel slow in a reg cab, let alone driving around in a double cab.

Dealerships in my area (DC/Virgina area) don't have any either. I always check after I bought mine just because it is of interest to me and I like to see what they get in and what the prices are.

It breaks down roughly like this: most lots have 350 vehicles or so, only 30-35 Tacomas at any given time...all V6!

I haven't had the same experience. I have a DCSB 4cyl and it has more than enough power, especially with the ECT power engaged. Its a truck, not a sports car, and it drives like a truck IMHO.

As far as why you don't see them in your area OP, I was told DCSB 4cyl is super rare by both of the local dealerships. This is especially true for the SR5 trim with interior in anything other than the dull gray. I bought mine from the far dealership and when I took it to the one closeby the service guys were fascinated by it as they had never seen one in person.

I'm not really sure what upset you but that wasn't the intent of my post. I just was offering a counter point of view based on my experience.

It drives like a truck as in its not a sports car and I don't expect to ever be a sports car. I won't win on the drag strip but it has more than enough acceleration for the highway and has performed well in every place I've taken. It also performs well on dirt roads, back country, etc. I have never been in a situation where I felt like it needed more power. I don't off-road as a hobby so I can't speak to that. Maybe a V6 would be better suited for that. I have hauled a few things here and there and it did great. I have driven on road trips and it did well on those as well. It shifts a little funny at times but that has more to do with the transmission I believe.

Anyways, I liked the 4cyl best and for me it has done very well. That might not prove to be true for everyone so of course they can do their own research and make their decision based on their needs.

Well, that's just it. Why spend the effort selling less expensive (and less profitable) I4 models when they can sell V6 models quickly?

Found one DCSB 4cyl 2016 used SR5. Went for a drive, I actually liked it to convince me that's what I want (need). The dealer priced it exactly like new. Before I even think about making an offer, it was sold. I don't get their pricing strategy. No rebates, no incentives. And they can't keep it on the lot. I totally understand the Toyota reputation and quality, but it's kind of ridiculous how well they sell. I understand, if they can get away with it, someone is willing to pay for it, why not. It's a business.

I'm not sure why, but if you can find it elsewhere, that may be your best bet. Only thing I would be concerned with is test driving it to make sure it acts like you are expecting it to.
