    Having good comms on the trail is essential, rather it be from a hand held or a mobile unit. Just don't consider a CB because they suck.

    If budget is the factor and trust me I understand this lol, you can always get a Baofeng hand held radio and mount it to a mag mount mobile antenna for better signal coverage. Or you can drill into the roof and properly mount an antenna for the best solution. All you need is the right antenna adapter from the radio to the mobile antenna cable/coax to make it work. You'll get some decent coverage with the radio connected to a proper antenna. But, nothing will beat an actual mobile unit for signal output.

    This is the adapter that I purchased from Amazon
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M5YN57O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    I have a Woukun UV3D 5watt handheld radio connected to a roof mounted antenna that I'm using for a temporary APRS radio via Blue Tooth TNC. I was surprised how far the signal reached on a recent trip to Death Valley. At one point in the trip while I was in Stripped Butte Valley and was sending and receiving packets to a station in Good Springs, NV.

    open this link and rest the mouse on each red dot, you'll see how far out the signal was reaching on just 5watts and the roof mounted antenna

    I also have a Yaesu FT-2800M 65watt mobile radio mounted in a DoubleDIN stereo adapter thingy in my junk that has worked flawlessly since 2009

    I HIGHLY agree!!! :thumbsup::fistbump: Me personally though, I don't like to stick to a single type comm, but that is just me. :notsure: My philosophy is that not everyone has HAM and not everyone has CB. Either one is actually pretty cheap. It just all depends on how much money you want to throw at either of them just like all of the other upgrades for our rigs.

    I will never forget a "documentary" that I saw one time of a couple that got stuck out in the snow. If they had either comms, it would have been better than nothing either way!!! The fiance/husband ends up dying and the fiance/wife came close to dying after about 7x days living off of whatever they had in their vehicle before she decided to leave as she knew she was going to die if she didn't. Anyways, if I can prevent something like that as much as possible, I will do that. Again, either setup is actually pretty cheap. In the end, it all depends on the person!!! Just my 2cents on the matter. :thumbsup::fistbump::cheers:

    Btw, SWEET SETUP!!! :thumbsup::fistbump::cheers:

    its been nearly 5 years since I used a CB on the trail with any group so I finally took it out of my junk a few weeks ago. I think we're lucky in California in that everyone has a cheap Chinese radio and/or HAM/Race radios that they use for comms in place of a CB radio. The rest of the country is catching up and finally getting on board to.

    Agreed, but there are still plenty of people throughout the country that still have CB. I don't know, just my thoughts. On occasion, I will talk to a long hauler... so, my point being, not everyone has HAM and not everyone has CB. I can tell you with absolute certainty that long haulers still use CB as I had to replace a CB radio in a company show rig from my previous employer, but it ended up being the CB antenna was not correctly put together. I guess, all I'm saying is that if I'm stuck in a situation, I'd rather have both, but, again, it all depends on what the person wants as their setup and safety factor.

    Another good thing to have on board ones own rig is a scanner. I have a Uniden Bearcat BC355N 800MHz (narrowband capable, since alot of your public safety is going narrowband these days, which, another project I was involved in a few years ago regarding narrowbanding). I need to get me a trunked scanner, but those things are pretty pricey. Eventually I'll get one though.

    Finally, I'm not just limiting my rig to trail only comms. Again, that's just me and my humble opinion on the matter.

    I often let someone borrow my other mobile radio and mag mount antenna while on a larger run and about 99% of the time that person will upgrade just from that experience..red pilling wheelers one run at a time lmao
