Will a K&N air filter void my warranty on my 2017 DCLB? I'd like to replace my current (stock) filter with a K&N. Lots of stuff comes up on Google when I search, but no clear answers.

    Any experience with this?

    See K&N's statement here: https://goo.gl/kvqxWj

No, it won't. If something goes wrong, the dealer has to prove that the filter caused the problem.........plus, K&N has a guarantee that they will stand behind their product.

No, shouldnt. (At one time, Ford wouldnt warranty engines running anything other than factory in dusty states; Arizona, Nevada etc.) But its no real gain, if anything just get the TRD filter and have no worries at all.

If you have a problem , change it back before you take it in .

Problems caused by the filter will not be covered by warranty. e.g. if you oiled the filter too much and the MAF sensor gets fouled, the cleaning will be chargeable.

The other problem with the K&N filter - letting too much dust through and causing engine wear, typically won't show symptoms until after the powertrain warranty expires.

    This is the correct answer.

It won't void the entire vehicle warranty. It CAN void something that goes wrong that can be associated with the modification.

If your Mass Air Flow Sensor fails after installing I can promise you the dealer will tell you to pound sand. If the dealer tells you to fuck off you really have no recourse except to hire lawyers. People saying the dealer has to prove it are technically/legally correct but do you really think a dealer is going to fuck around if he thinks your mod caused the problem? No he will just tell you to hit the road they won't work on your truck unless you pay. So what will you do when they say that? Hope you have a lot of time and money to get a lawyer if that happens.

    Like, so many.
So what's the advantage of an aftermarket filter?

I have one on my 2015 and the dealershirp tried to sell me a replacement because their tech said my air filter was due for a change. I just asked if he even looked because i have the K&N in the truck. He just walked away feeling like an idiot. They never looked just wanted to screw me over

The "performance" filters from K&N, AFE, AEM, etc. are washable and reusable. Over some 10 years you might break even on cost compared to replacing the OEM filter each year. That's about it. The stock engine can't use more airflow, and sound is unchanged because you are keeping the stock intake.

I was then told that a dry one is OK.

Bottom line: Waste your money however you wish but there maybe better ways to waste it than a K&N air filter.

"Will a K&N air filter void my warranty?"

No, within limits as explained above; nor will it do anything else except maybe make intake noise a bit louder ("better" according to some), which provides a powerful placebo effect making some think there has been some performance boost.

I have never seen--though I often asked to see--any back-to-back dyno runs comparing a new OEM filter to any aftermarket filter, snake oiled or otherwise; where ONLY the air filters were changed and there was any measurable difference in engine power other then what would be expected between back-to-back runs.

We did some years ago in Daytona dyno a 1992 Miata with a Purolator paper filter, some green foam thing, and no filter at all--there was no difference. FWIW we also did the same Miata with a "high-flow" aftermarket cat and a "test pipe" (no cat)--again there was no measurable difference...
