Got my transmission updated and ATF checked. Drove like an ass while it "learned" for about 500 miles. I have no gear hunting or slipping issues. Doesn't feel sluggish either.

Long beds rule, I had tsb rev1 done at 8k miles because of wacky shifting, hard down shifts, clunk when going from reverse to drive. Shifts to 5th gear at 40 MPh and then lacks power.
Amen brother on this. Need to Crack the ecu, come on you tuners out there. Help us out.

I don't really go above 3500 RPM in daily driving and most is 1500-2500. Not really any downshifting issues either.

Run it in S mode if it's shifting more than you want it to, manual even recommends it to reduce "unnecessary upshifting".

Depending on speed, you might find yourself toggling between gears where the truck can't balance best fuel economy or maintain momentum when using D. When that happens I kick it over to S mode and remove the higher gear choice.

Go Manual!! - so VERY happy I did. Even more so after joining this forum. I find the 6spd MT is smooth as butter and a blast to drive.

After driving this truck for about a week now it seems to me that it tends to start out in a higher gear and tries to get to those higher gears sooner. It seriously feels like it starts out in 2nd gear. I've also read that the transmission is adaptive. It there any proof behind that? And lastly, is there a software update that would fix the issue?

All I ever use anymore is S5 on the highway and S4 in town.

I run my truck with the transmission in S5 most of the time and it definitely improves fuel economy.

Not sure why this is even being discussed?

I'm 50/50 between D and S mode now and like you, also saw better fuel economy when in S.

Was a bit surprised by that too.

Yup, issues. Got mine in April (2017) and slips on the acceleration sometimes--dealership told me originally it was a known issue and a recall would be coming. Second visit in at 10k still no notice of a recall and now they tell me it's the transmission. Brand new car with transmission issues...this seems like bad news bears.

My 16 Limited had three trans issues. One was shifting from R to D. Big delay. The second was a constant search on the Hwy. The third was an unnerving surge at idle while parking. Sometimes I felt that I might go right through the garage. Was continuously told this is normal until they found the fix. A trans update turned mine into a fine driving machine. Just like a Taco should be. Fast forward, now I'm in the differential loop. Its been sitting at the dealership for 7 weeks waiting for the fix. Toyota dealership gave me a new 4 runner as a loaner. Thanks but not my Taco. If I'd wanted a 4 runner I'd have bought one.

The tranny isn't terrible, I know alot of people complain. My only real complaint is driving up step grades at highway speeds. The transmission and enigne hate it...

Fox/OME/Icon lift. TRD Beadlocks. Toyo MT’s. Pelfreybilt, RCI, Mobtown armor.
I just had a weird issue yesterday. Was parked in my driveway (inclined). Put it in D to pull into the garage, let off the brake and it rolled backwards like it was not in D. I lightly gassed it and heard some bunch of clicking underneath me. I braked and put it back in P. Let it sit about 10 seconds, put it back in D and it did the same thing again. Turned the truck off, started it back up and it did fine after that. Worries me. Hopefully no damage. Calling dealer this week.

I have also experienced this same issue probably 3-4 times all on a incline shifting from reverse to drive. Not sure what it is but it definitely doesn't sound good. My dealer says they can't replicate the issue. I'll be eager to hear what your dealer says.

Imagine being on a boat ramp and having that happen. Not good. Keep us up to date.

Was there a slight delay before you heard the chatter and started to roll back?

    Mines fine.

But see my other comments here after a driving trip on the freeway.
