A coworker has a 2017 4runner limited with the 20" wheels. He purchased the 17's from the 2016/17 TRD Sport Tacoma, and was told by the installer that they don't clear the brakes as the limiteds have larger brakes. Does this sound right?

    Thanks in advance!

4Runners do have larger brakes, chances are the issue has to do with the offset. The Tacoma comes with higher offset wheels than the 4runner. This pulls the wheel in more under the vehicle and could be the reason why the wheels don't clear the brakes.

Ah makes sense. It sounded like he was under the impression it wasn't something spacers would fix, but not sure. Either way, I think he wanted the ability to swap the wheels/tires depending on driving conditions, so I don't think spacers were a route he wants to go even if it was viable.

I guess the larger question is, do all 4 runners have the same brake size? He was told that the limited's with their 20's have larger brakes, and that he would need to find an 18" or larger wheel. Sounds like that's misinformation and basically any 4runner factory wheel could be swapped.

Correct, he will need an 18" wheel to clear the bigger calipers found on the 4Runners. Rookie mistake, but at least he can sell the 17" wheels for a fair amount. He should get most of his money back.

Yeah that's what I'm referring to. Considering he has the limited, he'll need an 18" wheel at least to clear everything. Sometimes the premium package becomes more of a pain for aftermarket modifications.

@BraskaTaco from what I can find the brakes appear to be the same size. In the past the Limited/Sport 4runners came with larger brakes. Not yet sure if the same for the 5th gen 4runners.
17" 4 runner wheels will fit the limited -

Limited in specific. At least, that was the case with my old runner.

Pretty sure Limiteds have same calipers as all the other models. 17's should fit... I have 17's on my SR5 P

I just looked up brake rotors and pads for a 17 4runner and it "fits all 4runners" aka fits all submodels for 2017 4runners. Same brakes. 17" FJ and 4runner wheels fit.

17" is a tight fit. I'd bet a wheel spacer would allow that TRD sport wheel to fit. The inside of a wheel has a smaller inner diameter towards the middle and as you move towards the outside edge it becomes a larger inner diameter. With the wheel spacer there may be other fitment issues as it'll stick out much further though. Much better off ditching the TRD sport wheels and going with 4runner or FJ 17" alloys
