That's funny. I never wheeled a 2 wheel drive Tacoma. My experience is in an 89 Toyota 2wd truck and a 78 Chebby Luv.

They are mind blowingly capable oddly enough. Might be a Toyota thing lol

2wd isn't ideal if you drive in a lot of mud or sand, or if you want to rock crawl get 4x4. Past that 2wd with a locker and good tires will get you a lot of places.

LOL i cant drive around in the winter without 4wd, nevermind off road!

I've got stuck a few times with 4x4... would have been stuck much sooner in 2wd...

When I lived in SoCal, I had a 98 Prerunner with a locker, I'd have to wait a day after it rained to actually go places in the desert. I always had tons of fun, and I could hang with the 4x4s and sidebysides but after the sand dried up, I'd get stuck at least once every trip out. I was done shoveling myself out of sand, so I upgraded.

Budget at this point is about $250000
I decided to go with an older 4wd as I don't think I would be able to afford A 2wd build that would function anything close to lunaticconcepts' build. The hard part now is finding a truck that has 4wd in my price range, but also less than 70k miles on it. These trucks do exist, it is just taking some intense combing and searching. When I find the right one I'll for sure post it up here

I don't know any broke highschoolers that can afford a 25k truck! You must work an awesome summer job!

What are 2012+ taco's selling for in Texas?

Be patient. That was were I messed up. It is possible. Don't settle for anything but what you want! I got a buddy who got a 2012 TRDOR 4x4 in 2014 for 25k with some stuff on it already.

I wouldn't say mind blowing, but they do pretty good. A buddy of mine has a locked PreRunner and he goes out with us. He gets stuck a lot, but he does try to hang. We just expect when we go wheeling with him that we are gonna have to yard him out a few times. :D

For 4x4 with reasonable miles it's about 27 all the way to 33 but every now and then you can get lucky. Then on the other hand a 2016 Pre runner and go for as low as 24

As it turns out, yes it does. K-Trail, Plenty of trips to the local ORV Park, Big Bend trails, etc.. Guess I'm gonna have to stop taking my truck to these places since it can't get me where I need to go. Damnit :/

Thankfully that's something that never happens here hahahah

Disclaimer: I'm not saying 2wd is better than 4x4, it never will be unless were talking baja racing, but even then 4x4 has it's place there. Just saying the kid will be fine with a 2wd if a 4x4 isnt in the budget.

Hey yall, I went for a 2012 trd sport, ended up going the 4wd drive route, and don't regret it at all.
Got the truck with a road armor bumper, nitto trail grappler 285s with 18in rims, 3in body lift, sound system and 45k miles on it for 26k. Iv had it about two weeks, already gotten it very stuck through some thorough dumbassery, and absolutely love it. Just wanted to thanks y'all for all your input- helped alot.

If you want to wheel, buy a 4x4 TRD Off-road.

Don't let others justifying their own mistake talk you into making the same one.
