I may go ahead and just fix this myself.

Or I could spend the money and time on a vacation. This is bs.

Seatbelt Mike needs to be fired. But he probably got a bonus for shoving this gutless turd out the door.

I'm thinking I may fix mine too if something is not done soon but I wonder how much this would cost...

Yet every service advisor in socal that I've spoken with around where I live says they have never heard of any Tacomas with howling differentials. Lol

That is likely because my completely winged non scientific study has revealed that 91% of their service techs are deaf, 8% have significant hearing loss, and 1% have excellent hearing but all work for another manufacturer.....

    Ugggh.

'16 DCSB 4wd Sport. ~7400 miles, purchased last June. I just developed a very high pitched whine at all speeds (very noticeable at 10-40mph with windows down) that seems to be coming from the rear end. Almost sounds like a belt or squealing brakes, but it's not either. Goes away when stopped. Doesn't sound like the rear end howl in the vids on Youtube. Any ideas?

I went to two dealers already. They blamed it on my agressive tires as well. Next step for me is to put on some stock tires and bring it back in.

Go to a private differential/drive train shop and ask them to write you a documentation letter supporting a possible worn differential. Then take that letter back to the dealership.

good luck. Dealers here in Canada are idiots and know nothing. We don't get anywhere close to as many TSB as the US. Unless this is a recall I doubt we'll even get anything as its such a low documented case here. I still can't tell if I have it or not.
If I end up having it I'll need to find another dealer to try as the one I go to right now already said having a 265 70 17 voids diff warranty. I think the service manager is just a bit of a cock sucker given how the fuck can you say a 1 inch taller tire completely voids a differential warranty.
What's next my sliders and skid plates void it because its extra weight?

    they don't
I'll basically have to as from what I've been told by a dealer here is bigger tires and lift which I'm probably installing in the summer will void all driveline warranty. We don't have that Magnuson Moss act thing here where they need to point directly to said mod as the cause. Any alteration to a component that makes up the driveline voids the whole thing from what the dealer told me.

    Hopefully its not too expensive.
Or if it turns out to be just a noise and no mechanical issue then fuck it, I'll just live with it. Not hard to just go 10km faster so I don't hear it lol. besides I can't tell if I have it because my tires are too loud.

you're better off just getting the diff shop to do it all for you.

I can't afford missing work for warranty work often which is why I pay to get it done right the first time by my mechanic.
Which I'm starting to accept is likely how I will go about this if I end up with it.

My Canadian 2017 DCOR went into JP Toyota victoria last week for the howling diff. they are replacing the entire rear diff, it's on order but there are currently none available in Canada.
Service rep for JP told me that a few months ago they were telling people that it was "normal". However, Toyota Canada has since issued new information about the Rear Diffs.

same noise as me it seems. take it into a decent dealer and get them to look at it. it is not normal!

it's the opposite story for my dealership. they have had 3 17's in so far with diff noises, all 3 are getting, or have gotten, new diffs. I also asked the service manager about changing tire sizes. Unless the tire i choose causes rubbing, it won't void the warranty.

I might need to try a different dealer that see's more trucks.
The one I went to is in the city all they see is rav4s camrys corollas and other grocery getters.
I'd stop going but one of the techs is super fuckin cute so its nice to go see her.

It also seems like the west coast dealers are a bit less retarded.

Unrelated to howling, I think, but interesting news regarding the rear diff either way.

Just shy of 10k, local dealer now opening a case with Toyota about the howling noise in the rear diff. The game begins!

Well, my TRD OR 4x4 DCSB was built in April 2016, and I've been hearing a howling noise when coasting especially when getting off throttle when cruising. I didn't think much of it, but the following article came out today and also found this thread while looking up stuff about the recall coming (may be a different issue than the diff howling, but if diff is leaking, I'd say it causes pre-mature wear):

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2017/04/27/toyota-tacoma-recall/100980084/

I will be pissed if this is the issue and they don't replace my differential. I just went in for my 1 yr service (1 yr / ~8500 miles) and complained that my rear diff lock won't engage easily. They "found nothing" that was wrong with it.

If my diff is worn, I'm not gonna let the dealer or Toyota just do some "tightening the screws" and get away with it - they better give me a new diff.
