My wife let go of the tail when opening it and let it drop. Only took her one time to convince me I needed it. Didn't like the sound or the chance of her continually doing that. Sure in the hell wasn't going to mad at her for an accident. Added this for piece of mind..
I just have one now, but when I add the weight of a mobtown, will probably get another.

Just place the zip tie like shown. Will not let the cable go on the inside while lifting. I got the idea from another member on this site. Not sure where.

Ummmmm, no. I'm using the zip tie method. But @Danny1956 added a couple extra brackets that got the strut out of the way of the cable. That's what I'm asking details on.

Thanks for including the source and part nos.

Received and installed mine last nite. (It was the EZ- Down brand)
More time was spent considering various solutions to the cable crunching problem than the actual install, that's for sure. Decided to start simple, and change things up only if necessary. My stash of cable ties was buried somewhere, so I tried using a 3/4"+ stainless hose clamp, fastened similar to mrlee's tie. Worked like a champ.

Tried out the 'gate again this am, and already the cable seems to have been "trained" to curve into a niche that will accommodate it (as mrlee has elsewhere suggested it would.)

Hope that the experiences of mrlee, Danny1956, and myself help the OP make a decision. The hardest part was remembering where I had stored my larger Torx drivers.

So, all that being said, I'm currently working on converting the 3rd gen tailgate assist to the 2nd gens. I've just about got it, there are a couple mods that have to be done like trim the plastic piece under the taillight to fit the assist part, cut the Male part of the hinge off the bed side (it can be put back on later), use the new hybrid tailgate hinge, all done.
As soon as it's all buttoned up I'll post a write up and pics.

For the same reason u put big tires, lift, LEDs, stripes, wings and all the other dodads, because you can, the only part that can fail is the factory Toyota 3rd gen assist mechanism, and I have not heard of even one failing. Just saying I guess it all boils down to because I can, just my .02

Cool man, I'd be interested in your write up. Always wanted to tinker with trying use the 3rd Gen's tailgate assist in the 2nd Gen.

It's not very difficult, the only draw back is the hinge piece is 80 bucks and the assist piece is 90 bucks both from the dealers. I was able to find 2 complete pieces for 40 bucks, of course they are used. If u could get a deal on those 2 pieces it would be a great mod.

I just installed one today and it doesn’t really go real slow. I was thinking adding one to the other side. I did remove the cable on the driver side so it wouldn’t pinch.i might modify mine and put the cable somehow on the outside of the strut
