Correct, the 2.7 in the Tacoma is a global Engine , it's distributed through many countries. it is used in the Hilux in other country's. It's percentage in America is small relatively speaking as America gets the V6 primarily. The 2.7 for America is made in Japan. There is another 2.7 factory in Indonesia which supplies other parts of the world with a 2.7

Test drove one just like your silver one back in August of 2015. Kicked myself many times for not buying that truck.

Remember, the 2.7 in the Tacoma is one of the only iron blocks that Toyota still produces. The 2.7 is a direct descendent of the legendary 22R it's still uses the same foundry today ! it's just an evolution of that original four cylinder. Toyota is keeping it around because it's very cheap to produce and it has legendary reliability and In other countries this motor is the staple in the Toyota lineup like it was back in the 80s here in the United States. This 2.7 doesn't share anything with a aluminum four-cylinder in a more modern toyota car or SUV. America it's a very small percentage of the 2.7 for a variety of reasons.

From the production people that i've spoken to and from the research that I have done
At this point in time the 2.7 with auto comes crated from Japan as engine only. The 2.7 manuals come dollied from Japan as a complete assembly.

The 2.7L used in the Venza (previously, as the Venza is no longer in production as of late last year) and the Highlander is the 1AR-FE. It is an all-aluminum engine and shares no design or components with the 2TR-FE in the Tacoma.

Correct, the RAV4 has the 2AR-FE, the Highlander has the 1AR-FE and the Tacoma has the 2TR-FE, which is an iron block engine.

The current Camry has a 2AR-FE or 2AR-FXE which is a 2.5L engine that is made in the USA. It is similar to what the RAV4/Venza/Highlander have, but not similar to the Hilux or Tacoma engine. The upcoming 2018 Camry is moving to the new A25A-FKS 2.5L, which again is a new engine unrelated to either the AR series or the TR series, though it does share some design elements (mainly related to fueling) with the 8AR-FTS in the Lexus IS/RC/NX200t.

There are a lot of Toyota engine factories globally, but none in the USA produce the 2TR-FE.

Mostly true, with the exception of it being an evolution of the 22R. I mean I guess it is somewhat of a descendant, but quite indirectly. They share no design similarities beyond being a 4-cylinder and having an iron block/aluminum head.

    They do.

It's not the same or similar. The Camry V6 is much more similar to the Tacoma V6 (both 2GR engines) than the Camry L4 is to the Tacoma L4.

The 2TR-FE and the R156F transmission are both made in Japan for the 2016+ Tacoma, so that would make sense. The 4-cylinder A/T trucks use the Toyota USA-supplied AC60E/AC60F transmission.

Check the fine print. Are they saying the engine is built in the country of Japan or the village named Japan in Bangladesh? :D

I have this truck, 5 speed. I considered getting a trd or, I would have had to have 4 doors I think in order to have a manual and I didn't want that. At all. I actually just wanted a regular cab but that just wasn't gonna happen. I knew going into a new Tacoma buy that I wanted a 4 cyl, and was hoping that the new engine had a timing chain and an iron block. So stoked that this engine is as awesome as it is, and made in Japan. Home of the production line where everyone does their best because the only alternative is family shame and suicide (I'm half Japanese and I'm not feeling that pressure whatevs) but really I just want to take this opportunity to say this truck, specifically this build, has been pure fucking win for me.

Sorry, meant to quote the above, after 600 miles I'm inclined to agree with you, this thing has exceeded my expectations in every way, what an awesome truck. Still blows my mind that these can be had for less than 25.
