I received the bushing today from ECGS, so I machined up a piloted driver for it which accepts one of several driver handles I’ve made for other seal drivers.

I had already made up the seal driver using a $2 PVC pipe fitting and scrap round piece of aluminum I had.

I also cleaned up the puller cross bar by milling off the rough plasma cut finish, and sanding the corners round so it’s nicer to handle.

The local Napa Auto Parts carries quart bottles of Lucas 85/140 gear oil for $9.95 a bottle, so I picked up two.

I crawled under my truck yesterday and grabbed the end of the drivers side CV shaft where it goes into the housing, and it's got quite a bit of play in it, and I did the same to the right side and it's nice a tight.

I just have to wait until my friend who lives about a mile from me gets back from CA, and then I can go over to his shop and use his nice 2 post lift to do the bushing installation.

Do we know if they all or most are using 85w 140 gear oil? I know that's what the ECGS guys call out but I was wondering if anyone was having any issues with a viscosity that heavy. Heavier than factory prescribes but if it's been better from some that have used it I'd like to know.

FWIW, I changed my diff fluid to Amsoil 75W-90 a few thousand miles after I bought the truck and I am going to continue to use it after doing the bushing install this weekend. I am sure if you polled the 2nd gen guys you'd find many still running the factory gear oil after the bushing install to no ill-effect. I know this is debatable, to each their own.

Same here. I have considered severe gear 75w 140 in the '17, but haven't come to the point of needing to to the bushing yet.

I'm trusting the guys who designed a fix (ECGS) that toyota couldn't or didn't care to address for the past ~20 years so I went with their recommendation for 85W-140 non-synthetic

Exactly. The largest one in the kit we had on hand was able to get mine out. Just a good thing to rent for free from the auto parts store just in case the factory worker takes his aggression out on your bearing when it's being installed like mine. Or if you don't want to buy the special tool... Renting this for free will work to remove it.

Although the tool does work nice and easy when the bearing is installed correctly.

To be fair, that's the oil they seem to recommend for everything so for anyone to suggest they recommend that oil as a somehow more bushing compatible oil is misleading.

Yes but others who are master techs have corroborated the recommendation which is why I went that route. Anyway to each their own.

Anyone have trouble getting the dust cover off to get to the 35 mm bolt? I cannot seem to get it off… been trying flat head screwdriver, to no avail.

It's tight. I took a chisel and tapped a little further out than where the seam is. It put a small dent in it but gave me room to put a screwdriver in and twist to get it off.

When you say further out, do you mean towards the cap or away from it. I tried using a chisel too, damn thing won't budge.

Any hopes I had of being able to use the method of rotating the axle 1/6 turn at a time and being able to pull the axle without using a ton of force seem to have vanished. I'm rotating it and then attempting to pry it out but it's not moving. Given the assembly method it seems like this should be universally achievable. Try some other method tomorrow.
