Greed is why you have a truck to drive, a computer to type on, an Internet on which to talk about it with others. Someone wanted to make money and developed products people would buy. :)

FYI my wife works for a pharma company so I have a little bit of familiarity.

Apart from some high profile pharma idiocy, drug pricing is a tricky thing. Much of the cost stems from government regulation. Many tens of billions of dollars may be spent on developing and testing three dozen potential new drugs over several years to find *one* actually works and passes through all the hoops to get FDA approval. Oh and the FDA approval process burns up a big portion of the patent period, leaving only a few years in which to recoup *all* those expenses with just the one drug before the patent expires and your competitors jump in with their reverse-engineered versions. Even those get expensive due to the FDA involvement in every stage of building the manufacturing plants, operating the plants, etc. Oh and if you figure out a way to make it cheaper and faster and easier? You start over from square #1 with the FDA -- which often just isn't worth it financially.

All for something maybe a few tens of thousands of people might suffer from.

Then all the providers (government medicaid/medicare, insurance companies, etc) all negotiate very hard with the pharma companies to get as low a pricing as they can possibly get. Usually with clauses in the contracts that say if some other organization gets a lower price, the pharma company has to give that lower price to them too.

That's the view from the inside. A bit different from the headlines. Sure, there's that azzhat who jacked a particular drug price. More the exception than the reality.

As to real estate prices... *shrug* Who doesn't try to sell their home or land for the most money they can get for it? Blame the buyers, not the sellers.

They had the vast majority of the market share, tried to get greedy and increase their prices. Which in turn resulted in them losing a large portion of the market and forced them to reduce their prices again to recoup some of that market share.

Goes to show that if you get too greedy, a competitor will swoop in and capitalize on your greed.

At work we stopped using epi pens and went to syringes drawing epi. It's greed in its worst form, just like the aids drug guy that raised the price like 500% because the people that need it have no choice but to buy it. There is a special place in hell for these people.

Not sure where you get "30-45 minutes" from. I worked in Redwood City for ~6 months at the peak of the dot-com boom that burst in 2000. I lived in San Mateo. Both are on the peninsula, just a couple of miles apart. It took me 30-45 minutes to drive to work. An inlaw lived in Alameda and worked at Cisco on the peninsula; it took him 2 hours to get to work. I have to assume that it's only gotten worse since then. (I did have a coworker who lived right in SF; he used the BART train and did okay.)
Yes times a bazillion. It's not only people making big dollars either. Lots of normal folks are utterly clueless about personal finances.
