I have a friend interested in purchasing a brand new Toyota Tacoma 2017. I was looking for your guys opinion on the 3rd gen tacomas, specially the individuals that had a second gen before owning a 3rd gen. Also my friend had heard that Toyota is possible going to come out with a larger motor or a diesel motor in there Tacoma next year does Anyone know about that ?

I don't see any drivetrain changes coming in the near future on the 3rd Gen.

Love mine, but I would definitely be tempted to trade it in in a few years if Toyota decides to bring the diesel.

    Diesel: Unfortunately no.
Larger motor: no, maybe turbo is all I can guess. I base my theory on previous posts I've done saying why doesn't Toyota copy the 3.5TT from the new 2018 GS into the Tacoma, but that won't happen. Could happen with the Tundra though, Toyota could try chasing after Ford's ecoboost.

I think the only real possibility is Toyota getting their act together and upgrading the 3.5 to where it belongs along with multiple revisions to the tranny. OR, they bring out a new 4 cylinder to replace the ongoing 2.7 they inevitably didn't do anything to and stuck in a heavier vehicle decreasing hwy mpg by 2 from the 2015-2016 switchover. Maybe even Toyota is thinking of trying a turbo 4 instead of the v6, that would make the EPA happy and give us endless tuning and modding options as long as Toyota doesn't lock us out.

I think the only thing getting a diesel soon would be the frontier, someone stated in another thread to me that the frontier was finally being updated, since the titan got the 5.0 cummins, Nissan might be ready to battle it out with GM and introduce a new 4cly cummins which would be cool actually.

The 2.7L is the reason I got the Tacoma. nearly 30 year old design with upgraded head, and the 15+ will run circles around the older 2.7's. Granted it's still a 4-Banger. Toyota already has the 2.5L that is in a few things.

I'm pretty sure Toyota would build their own diesel engine, and not contract it out. Ford learned, and now they make their own.

Also, the EPA tweaks the mpg testing, so it's only partially comparable.

But OP, the 3rd gen is much quieter inside compared to 2nd gens. I'd seek a 3.5L with a manual, base model TRD OR, they have an MSRP of 34k.

I had a 2nd gen TRD Sport short bed and now have a 3rd gen TRD Sport long bed. The larger bed is by far the best upgrade (I really wanted the long bed on the old one but couldn't pass up the deal I found), but I also love all the new tech. People complain about the transmission but mine has been fine so I don't know if it's just a time bomb or not...

I just got one and my biggest issue is that instead of map pockets in the doors I get THIRTEEN cupholders. WTF? Even I can't drink that much beer at one time.

I have had a 95, 09 and now a 17, loved them all, miss them all. That said I really enjoy my 17 Sport v6 6 speed manual. After reading posts here at TW, I would be concerned with an auto tranny. I don't think the manual trans are immune either, I believe they changed the clutch design and I will say mine is a squeaky annoying thing.

Scritch...you prolly missed the thread the other day on all the great things the 3G can do....those cupholders are for a potential trip to Mars...for water and waste I'd imagine.

The only real problem I see with the 3rd gen Tacoma is the windshield. Apparently they are not very good. My wife just caught a rock and our 3rd windshield since JANUARY broke.

You don't find anything wrong with a recall for 228k trucks?

heard that rumor too. I have a buddy who heard from someone down the grapevine that Toyota has a diesel engine (i forget the size) that is testing emissions. rumor has it the 2019 may contain a diesel... who knows. but I'm holding onto my 2nd gen until these are released.
