We dont have them up here that I know of, maybe too cold or something. When I lived in Oregon you would see skunks and opossums on the road dead all the time.

 

Dogs following you around your property of their own volition is different. That's what they've been bred to do.

Lots of predators won't eat an animal that they haven't killed themselves. They've evolved that avoidance tendency to help prevent catching or spreading disease. If they didn't kill it, they don't know what did, so it might make them sick.

 

True.

Now the armadillo's defense tactic of jumping a couple feet in the air is rather counterproductive against automobiles...

 

So, playing dead with a bear doesn't work?

 

Well, if you were out deer hunting and you had to run up and kill it in person, face to face, and the doe you'd spotted just keeled over and died before you got there, without a mark on it, and started emitting a horrible smell, would you still eat it? Or would you think better of it and go find another one?

Best tactic for bears is go with a buddy who can't run as fast as you can.

 

I would only eat the deer that I shot, if it died from unknown reasons and stunk it would be reason not to eat it..

 

Same with the Opossum's technique of playing dead, and the skunk's technique of threatening a hosedown, and the porcupine's technique of rolling into a ball pokey-side out.

 

That's why I always take a fat friend camping
