So I'm about to start looking for an axle with a locker on it but I was wondering what kind of problem me I might run into. Does anyone know if I'm going to have to change anything with my
Computer? (LSD off light won't go off or anything like that)
I can do the mechanical end no problem but I'm literally clueless about the technical end of it. Any tips/advice are welcome.
    Thanks guys

why not just add a locker to your current rear end? alot easier and not far off on price. and a better stronger unit.

Because idk how to do that myself.lol I'm pretty sure I'd have to drill/tap it but I don't know anything about if my differential would work with a locker or not or anything like that.

As a TRD Sport owner, I'd also be interested to learn what options there are for getting a locker, other than trade it in for an Off Road.

So you're comfortable with changing an entire axle but not comfortable with just the rear 3rd member?

You can buy a built third member from ecgs and just swap it over. It's an easy 2 hour job.

So will that third member just fit right in to my axel? That's all I need to change?
That's why I made this post. To find THAT stuff out.

Also my Prerunner has a 7.4" and ecgs only has 8" and 8.4" and idk if that'll work. But with those numbers mixed with what little I know, math is telling me no.lol

Yes that would be all you have to change. Only thing is if you go max and get an arb air locker, you will have to get a compressor and run the air lines and wiring for the compressor. There are other options that don't involve air.

As far as rear end, I don't know what you have. I didn't think there is a 7.4" rear. Is it a 2wd 4cyl?

Really dude do some searching on this site. This topic has been covered a million times.

Well dang. That's doesn't sound like too big of a thing to tackle. I've got a buddy that can help too. I think I'll stick with an electronic for now. Mines just a little Prerunner after all.lol
Well I got 7.4" from the transmission code in my door jam but the code guide I found was from an older post so it may have changed. I've got a 4.0 V6 2wd.
I know I ask stupid questions but this is my first truck so I gotta learn somehow.lol I most definitely will be continuing researching this topic here though. There is SO much collective knowledge here to be gathered.

I was under the impression the 8 and 8.4 are in all 2nd gen trucks but I am not knowledgeable about 4cyl 2wd trucks

You have the 8.4" rear. Non-LSD

You cannot just bolt on an e-locker 3rd.

There are air and electric lockers available for the 8.4.

He was in the beginning. Swapping 3rds was brought up as an option(by yourself).

LOL. I thought he was asking possibility of swapping entire axle. I suggested swapping just third member with aftermarket locker as an alternative for cost and ease

The 8.4 axle housing differs from the 8.0 housing. The E-locker will not fit into the 8.4 housing.
In order to retain your OEM axle housing, installing the 8.0 e-locker 3rd requires notching the housing to the left side of the opening on the 8.4 housing.

30 spline axles are the same for both.

Go with a complete 3rd from Marlin Crawler w/ ARB locker. This way, you can choose a different gear ratio if needed and you'll have a compressor for airing up/ down and possibility of running air tools, depending on the model of compressor you purchase.

    Good luck.

@Ritchie is right. If you are in the East coast then ECGS
are your guys. Give them a call and they will talk you through what you need. You don't have to find all the details yourself.
