    I think you got pretty good advice in this thread, along with the usual TW love.

    I think you know you will eventually need 4.88's, for now I would just drive it in D, the transmission will shift as it sees fit. Not much you can really do to help the trans except a regear. On hills I would lock it in a good gear for pulling to avoid constant shifts.

    I wouldn't worry about the engine, I run mine pegged all the time. 2.7 dgaf.

    I think its pretty bad-ass that your running 35s on a 4cyl; Definitely save money for re-gearing_ Although I think if you're going to be running in 3rd gear on the highway I would recommend a transmission cooler if your truck didn't come with one. It'll help keep the transmission temps in check and prolong the life of the fluid/transmission. They are pretty cheap and pretty easy to install;

    I just installed one on an 98 Dodge 1500 that a friend of mine had me help him replace a transmission because he was towing a boat and had a camper in the bed; ended up burning up with transmission. I cut the return line from the radiator to the transmission then used a hose barb and attached the cooler to it from there and routed from the cooler back to the return line going back to the transmission.

    So you got HOT ATF fluid coming from the transmission; going into the radiator to help cool it then out the radiator and into the transmission cooler then from the cooler back into the transmission; Been working great and so far no troubles with his heavy hauling; all temps kept in check and only cost about 60 bucks.

    It's cheap insurance.

    With 35s on my truck and stock gears I cannot use 5th gear. I live in 4th on the highway and on almost every slight incline I downshift to 3rd (75mph @ 4500rpm).

    I'm regearing over the next few weeks, I'll let you know how it goes.

    The A340 is the same transmission used in the 1st gen v6 Taco and also in the Supra. Guys have put 1000hp to this transmission with little to no modification to the transmission. It's not bulletproff (nothing really is), but it's pretty stout. I doubt a small S/C is going to kill it.

    My tires came in before my lockers and gears did. I suffered through a week with 4.10s and 35s lol

    The manual 3rd gear is more similar to the auto 2nd gear. I constantly am experimenting with my auto and running the auto in 3rd at 60-70 it revs higher but seems happy. The D is an overdrive gear and I cruise with that at something like 1500 RPM but if I need to speed up I will drop it to 3rd and if I stomp the gas all the way down it goes to second all the way to 4500-5000rpm. The only problem with running in 3rd is using a little more fuel. I just installed the LCE header and AFE air filter and it helps a little and it also gets about 1MPG better after install. My 5 lug has 3:53 diff so even my little 235s made it feel slower. I probably will regear to 4:10 soon. So for now you could if you are on flat ground let it lug along D if your not in a rush. But running in 3rd is fine too.

    We share the same addiction. I wish I could go everyday, it's been a tough season in south Ga for me. I have killed two birds, but the last two weeks they have been quiet other than the courtesy roost gobble.

    Ignore hx989, he's a dick. No literally, ignore him! If you click his name, a little window will pop up. You'll see a link to "ignore". All it does it just hide his posts. I've got a few people on my ignore list, and it's great. Out of sight out of mind.

    Bump...I have been sitting on the money for a re-gear for awhile. I have a 2.7 5 spd with 255/85r16s and a ton of armor. I wheel the snot out of my rig and I am 100% going to re-gear for more on trail performance. I have to slip the clutch too much on obstacles. The questions is for me -> should I go 35s + 4.88s? Probably yes...

    The answer is always yes if trying to decide if you should go with 35s.
