I feel like I missed something here lol.

No politics, just economics. Proposed trade changes could radically change exports to Canada's largest trade partner. I figured that was worth mentioning. Softwood lumber has come up before. The quota system in Canada has been quiet for years though.

I've been away for a while with a new one in the house keeping everyone awake. Good times.
Anywho as far as economics for Canada....
Honestly let's look at the softwood lumber from further afar. American lumber supplier says, "hey all the guys getting lumber from Canada are going to have to pay 20% more now. Shit I think I'll take a bit of that and bump mine up a bit to make a bit more cash. Ya know this is capitalism and all." So he bumps it up say 5-10% to make a bit more money but all it does is increase the prices of housing in the states all over. They can't supply the amount we can so they will still buy from us at Canadian dollar value, which is at $.74 which is still a bargain with a 20% tariff.
This will only hurt the little guys trying to buy a house. Maybe we get a little hit but with the way the lumber industry has been streamlined it's good at the moment. Not to mention the day after this was released Canfor and West Fraser stocks both jumped the next morning so someone is thinking it will be ok.

I was one and so was the old man the last time this happened. And another one during the oil crash recently. Natural resource economics.

I thought we just shipped all our lumber raw to the states. At least that's what I heard from you last time? Are there many mills left?

Today I was cutting the grass for the first time and noticed two shingles had flipped up in the wind. On closer inspection I have a large patch of shingles starting to curl. With a kid on the way I can't really afford a new roof for a couple of years (over 10K from what I hear for a new roof). Can I just glue them down @OZ-T or is that a really stupid idea.

Time to start prioritizing lumber sales to Asia over the US at least for BC

I have no argument against the concept of diversifying the market , my concerns have always been with the safety and consequences once it gets to tidewater which are shared by many people on the coast

For sure and definitely a concern which is why there is so much being done to attempt to prevent any releases.

Items such as the Kits CG opening again, 150 million in spill response equipment and research in bitumen in salt water along with all boats being qualified and inspected by 3 different agencies and tug escort and pilots all the way out to Buoy Juliet. This is not to mention the fact that KM has never had a single tanker of theirs release a payload.

They have new opposition now though with the 2 tribes in the US fighting against the US Coast Guard for allowing potential impacts to a threatened species so we will see how that goes.

In all honesty I feel we need to diversify or start refining our own product but this is in the same line as lumber. They want our raw materials not the refined ones.
China is actually doing a ton for reducing emissions and pushing further and further away from oil and gas as they are smogging themselves to death and with a communist government they can push anything through.

As far as endangered species impacts forget the fact that 400,000 different boats and ships come and go from the Port of Vancouver. Let's maybe stop bringing in Walmart garbage and we can reduce that volume by way more than 400 I bet.

On the other hand ........... Needed to replace 5 Emerald Cedars. Best price at several local nurseries was $48- $75 each for anything 4 ft or above. Even tried Lowes, but theirs were all very small. Happened to be by Walmart and they had a hundred of them for $17.77 each. Product of Canada.
