old news but i bought a 2017 KTM 690eR last saturday because i can

plan is to make this a nice adventure style bike for motorcycle trips. id like to be able to use this bike for weekends/even possibly week long. already ordered a phone mount and handlebar usb&cig socket for charging.

already starting to look at small backpacking tents for ease of packing. specifically this one for the time being : https://www.amazon.com/ALPS-Mountaineering-Lynx-2-Person-Tent/dp/B008J4AZSQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8

i know ill need to figure out luggage/bedding/food (probably jet boil for the stove).

    @TheMuffinMan any tips?

fuck old tires. pretty sure they are just out of round/old because they rode fine new. ride is all wobbly and they just sound noisy. death wobble on the highway too. using dynabeads but ive used them before without issue.

taking off the shinko 244s from the drz. throwing on the pilot road 4 front since it has plenty of life still and ordered a shinko 006 (150/60) for the rear.

Rally Raid subframe upgrade bolts and a rear rack+side racks to help get the load off of the gas tank rear end if you're carrying camping gear. I'd avoid the Rally Raid front tanks and go with Safari if you desire longer range but honestly none of the auxiliary gas tanks are well designed and I'd avoid them entirely.

The renazco or maybe it's really raid now fuel filler neck helps keep dirt out of the gas tank extending your fuel filter life.

I like Wolfman soft luggage. Hard luggage would tweak the gas tank since there's no true subframe. The gas tank/subframe has only three attachment points two upper small bolts and one longer lower bolt (lower usually fails without the bolt upgrade if carrying a load of camping gear down bumpy dirt roads). Husqvarna may have fixed this from the factory though I'm not sure.

On my 2012 KTM 690 the rear spring was soft from the factory. Somewhat easy to replace with some big zip ties to hold the compressed spring after compressing it on the shock body, use cheap harbor freight spring compressors to compress the new spring then zip tie it for installation.

Front forks seemed harsh to me for dirt. Revalving (and respringing because why not) does wonders I'm told.

Seat Concepts seat makes it a lot more comfy.

The small KTM hardparts windshield gets air off the belly and onto the upper chest. Makes longer distances at higher speeds a tad more comfortable and doesn't intrude at all when off roading.

Handguards from the factory were plastic on mine, replaced with a HDB setup with integrated mirrors after the stock ones broke.

Early years had fuel pump/filter issues but it was fixed by 2012.

Great bike though! Super light and gobs of power. Probably out accelerates the larger adventure bikes up to 65mph or so. Super flickable around town. Tall freaking seat height. I got 55mpg at 65 to 70mph.

The stock exhaust is hot, aftermarket is good but then fuel injection tuning becomes a thing.

 thanks! gives me some ideas to look into. i was already tempted with a wings exhaust but figured id rather get storage/luggage settled down before i spend the extra money.

I had Wolfman branded racks but they don't make them anymore. Not sure what racks are available now.

And so much for Suzuki reliability! I'm in San Francisco on my 2003 DL1000 and the stator went out right as I got to my hostel. Better here then the Nevada desert the day before though. :D

Well nope, after cracking the cover off I found that the factory adhesive holding rotor magnets (2 of the 6 anyway) failed and that is either a rotor replacement or removal (special tool) + deep cleaning + long/24 hr setting JB Weld. Then the stator shenanigans. So I said forget that jazz, not while I'm on the road. Bought a plane ticket home next weekend, borrowed a friend's bike and headed north on that today and did the lost coast. Backpacking in the Redwoods tomorrow and Thursday, return by Friday. Prep bike for shipping, mail side cases home or figure out if they can be checked at the airport. Fly out Saturday afternoon.

The coast was epic in a few spots that made it all worth it.

making it official. doing my first adv ride ever and the real maiden voyage for the ktm Oct 30 - Nov 3. Going to tackle the Kentucky Adventure Trail (KAT) which is a 1000 mile round trip.

Time to crunch down and start ordering some items for this since i plan to only camp alongside the trail occasionally grabbing gas in towns.
