I go to Japan for business trip from time to time, and I saw many SUV or Truck made by Toyota has these Fender mirror on their Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser, Hilux, Hilux Surf (4Runner in US). I wonder why US don't have this as an option. It seems to work pretty well when I drove my coworkers Land Cruiser Prado. What you guys think? s-l500.jpg s-l500 (1).jpg

    On second look...

Is that a designed to check area in front of the vehicle??? Similar to our school buses?

Seems I remember they used to regulate rear views to be further foreword than the US as a method to reduce the blind spot. Not sure that's the intended function of what you have posted a pic of. Nor am I aware if the other is still (or I guess ever was) regulatory.

I think it's just more of a parking mirror.

.... and yet the Japanese apply more computing power in their toilets than we used sending men to the moon...

Surprised they don't just put a $23 camera in the nose.

I thought I did read a while back regulators in Japan made provision that would allow use of cameras. (I'd search for it but my connection on my phone is so poor I keep being logged off TW.)

This is exactly what I just mentioned and it's directly from Toyota. I was in Japan and this blind spot fender mirror looks not cheap and it works fine on parking and see two spots on the front of the vehicle, the Front, and the curb side. From the beginning I had the same thought that it might seems like a school bus, but however once I drove the truck and then I see the reason why they put that on. Of course you would say this can be replace by the front and side camera, but I consider this is as a second option.

    I don't doubt it's useful.

I think the FJ cruiser's color somehow can match our Tacoma.

Have you ever tried to park in Asia!?!? It's a freekin nightmare. There is like zero space anywhere.

Maybe its also to be able to see scooters and motorcycles cutting you off everywhere.

Yes, I did that last trip in japan. Drove my coworker's Land Cruiser Prado in Tokyo Shinjuku. Parked on the street and it is absolutely difficult, but glad to have this fender mirror so it does help and do the job right. Although we don't have such tight living environment in most of the US, but I still think this is somewhat helpful in my opinion.

I wonder if you don't see anything like that here anymore is because of pedestrian crash safety rules.
