I upgraded from 37s on 18s; progress to come. I have more cutting and hammering to do to make these fit when flexed or tucked offroad..

Most of the action and progress pics will probably end up on my Instagram feed (and stories): SPVRTAN.

    Updates..

After 24 hours of driving it and testing it out a bit on a local trail in the middle of the night, there's no rub at full lock on flat ground. There's about a centimeter's worth of rub on the tires knobs at tuck and lock, which means I'm going to have to make at least a half-inch's worth of clearance by cutting more and smashing the pinch welds. The pinch welds are where most of the rub is. While my BMC I did years ago could be more aggressive, there's maybe only a millimeter's worth of rub when tucked. I'll cut more off the body mounts, too, while I'm at it again.

The truck's track width increased by about 2" due to the tires being wider (the 37s were 12.5" and these 40s are 13.5") and the offset of the 17" wheels being 0mm (the 18s were +12mm). The truck's height increased by almost 2" because the tires are pretty much true 40s and when comparing before the 37s were worn down to basically 36s. I also cranked up the front coilovers a bit to add an extra inch of front ride height. The 7" BDS lift kit is still only cranked to about 6" so I could max out that more but I don't want to lose down-travel when offroading.

    Clearance plans after cutting/hammering

Since most of the rubbing is on the wheel well sheet metal, I'm also going to fab up a custom 3/4" body lift to help clear a bit.

I'm currently running 1.25" Spidertrax wheel spacers and am considering going down to a 1" BORA wheel spacer to minimize arc radius. If I recall correctly, you can't safely do a wheel spacer due to bolt/nut clearance from the bearings.

Performance plans after clearance is solved

Obvious: Regear to 4.88s (and throw lockers front and rear while at it)

Note: I have a supercharger already.

    However

Keep in mind that this is my daily but I also rarely drive my truck to work (I've been using my girlfriend's car) and even if I do start driving to work again my office is just 1.5 miles away from my house; so I'm hardly stressing the drivetrain often. It really only takes abuse during overland or offroad trips, which is somewhat equivalent to a "normal" tundra towing heavy loads around as far as overall stress during the lifespan of the rig -- at least that's how I'm looking at it.

If it turns out the performance isn't that bad and tolerable for a while longer, I may delay the gears a few months to get a custom rear bumper made with a tire carrier for the full-size spare. That's pretty important for my offroading adventures since I do a lot of overlanding and bed space is precious.

    Considerations

    Upgrading the steering system.

Upgrading the bracket lift's spindles (will have to be custom for sure).

    Repairs and spares

Naturally, with a tire size this big and how much I abuse my truck offroad (this ain't your typical "SEMA Bro" truck on a 12" lift rocking 40s on 24" wheels) I'm going to need spares. I currently have 3 spare OEM CV axles, 2 spare OEM wheel bearings, and a set of spare bracket lift spindles.

    Dreams

After the gears, lockers, rear bumper, and some other smaller overlanding mods, I plan on "frankensteining" my build by combining a long-travel kit (most likely Camburg) with my bracket lift up front. Everything should bolt right up. The only thing is -- in order to maximize the travel capability of the LT kit -- I'll need custom coilovers up front. There are several reasons to do this..

    1) Increased articulaton/travel.
    2) Upgraded joints and arms as far as strength and durability.
    3) Wheel hub moved forward an inch.

One potential downside is that my track width will be ~4" wider and the truck is already wide. Removing the wheel spacers wouldn't be an option but going to 1" would. The wheel spacers are needed to clear the bracket lift's spindle when on 17s. However, a potential upside to the increased track width up front, and maintaining the current track width in the rear (so that's a ~4" difference between both) is that cornering will be better and the front CoG goes down a bit.

I've gained about ~2" of track width with the new wheels and tires ..so, yeah, haha.

Well, I tested during a night run on an easy local trail but couldn't get any good shots because well.. it was night. Here're some pics of it before we headed out while airing down..

Even on a Tundra, those are large tires. Nicely done.

Definitely upgrade your steering by utilizing a box with some sort of swing set. Or switch over to TTB and make it really kick ass!
