I've got a 2003 Tacoma V6 4x4 with locker, looking to change rear diff fluid.
Manual says gl5 sae 90 hypoid, I can't find it at local auto parts store, I looked on Royal Purples web site and they only have it in 5 gal. Buckets.
Can I use a different sae??? Should I use any additives???

Also I'm getting a whining noise from rear diff, I tow a boat a lot and was wondering if any additive could help quiet it.

    Thanks for any help.

Replaced stock radio with a Pioneer AVH series head unit. Focal component system w/a 10" sub powered by 2 Alpine amps. Weathertech floor mats. Line-X'd the bed. SCS Ray 10’s, Installed an A.R.E. MX series camper shell. All-Pro Apex front bumper w/ All-Pro skid plates all the way back to the Trans. Low Range fuel skid plate.
Ask East Coast Gear supply about what type of oil to use for lockers, I know they suggest a different type. They've been in the business for a long time and deal a lot with Tacoma's. I don't have lockers but just replaced all my oils about a month ago

ECGS told me to run Lucas when they did my regear, I don't have a locker though.

Ecgs actually suggest 85w140. They have a tech article on their site about it.

Well I thought there was an article specifically about gear oil, but I guess not. It mentions it in their gear break in procedure. http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/ft-1479-new-gear-break-in-procedure.html
I also spoke with a tech on the phone and he suggested 85w140 since it will cushion the gears better. I don't really see any downside to a heavier oil other than creating more drag and potentially lowering fuel economy. If you live in a very cold location then you may want a thinner oil.

    Thanks for the info fellas.

Emailed ECGS and it sounds like my pinion bearing is going and they recommend getting it looked at before it fails.

Sooo it sounds like I'm going to be looking for a mechanic, any idea what this will cost???
