I don't even lift anymore but I just came back to say @zacharypaul89 I am done with law school.

But seriously, re: lifting, this is my last week of physical therapy and my back feels great. And now that school is over, I am going to get back in the gym next week. Keto and no lifting since 2/28/17 has me down to 240 so I know my strength is going to be shot. It's been tough sitting it out but I am pumped to get back in the gym. I know I am not anywhere near on their level, nor were my injuries, but Brandon Lilly and Dan Green and their comeback stories have kept me motivated while I have had to sit on the sidelines. I am going to take my recovery/rehab/training as seriously as I ever have, and am looking forward to the time when I can start smashing PRs again.

Has anyone used a water rower machine?

I am moving to a town of 3,000 people and the gym looks subpar (as expected). I am actually surprised they have a gym to be honest. I have wanted a rower for awhile but I think it's going to be the easiest/best option to hit all the muscles and burn some calories. I'll be working 10hr days so I would prefer something I can get a quick workout on in the morning and before bed without driving to a gym.

Just curious on impressions with the quality. All the research leads to the water rower being better for home use and the Concept 2 being better for competition.

I've used both. I have a Concept 2 at home and my gym has a water rower. I don't think I'd say that one or the other are better for home or competition. Both get the job done. Water rowers are typically cheaper. The one at my gym works well. Concept 2 is quieter and smoother. Not sure what model they have at my gym, but I can look tomorrow when I'm there if you're interested.

I have heard the exact opposite than what you just said . Guess this is why asking people is a good thing. Water rowers run about $1000 for the basic model and concept 2 is ~$800-900 (i think). So similar price for entry level. Everyone has said the water rower is quieter...hence why its better for home but the concept 2 is a bit more ergonomic. I have used the concept 2 many times and like them but I hate the foot strap on them and the fan is pretty loud so doing it while watching a movie would be a no go. Never used the water rower before but the calming "swoosh" sound and wood styling caught my attention.

At that price point and with wood styling, I think you're looking at a very different water rower than what I'm using.

I guess see if you can find a gym or store with one like the one you're looking at and try it out.

Looks like they have a rental program. It's not the best deal...but its not the worse to try it out. You put a $200 deposit, then $10 a month for 3 months. If you like it, you can put the $200 deposit towards the purchase, if you don't like it, they charge a $100 return fee. So $130 for 3 months use if I don't like it. An extra $30 if I do like it.

Looks pretty cool. I have seen those before but never used one. Can't speak to it specifically. I looked around a bit. You might find THIS ARTICLE interesting.

I bought a concept 2 (model D) last weekend. The fan is loud as hell if you're pulling at a quick clip. If you had headphones on though it would drown it out...

Brand new from concept they are $900+$45 to ship but no tax. Amazon has them for $945 with prime shipping (not sure about tax). I bought an "open box" one from a local fitness equipment reseller for $850 (cash, no tax). Someone bought it a week earlier and opened the box but never took it out when they decided they couldn't use it. It took about 5 minutes to pull out and snap together once I got it home.

I read a lot about how you can snag used ones on Craigslist for a lot cheaper but I'm using mine to run a personal training business so I wanted new with a warranty in case anything goes wrong down the road..

Yeah, apparently people can find them used. I never had much luck out here. I did see an ad for a business 3 hours from where I'll be moving selling the rowers...not sure its worth my trip when shipping is cheaper than gas. Concept 2 seems to be a great choice for fitness reasons but the noise and the slight artificial feel throws me off. Looks like water rower gives a military discount that may be enough to sway me towards then. Ill have to see if I can get a similar deal with concept 2.

I love the feel of the concept 2. It's so smooth. The rower my gym has is a POS. I'm not huge into rowing for real so I can't compare it to actual rowing on water (I do paddle board but that seems different) though...

I am talking about the first few inches of the pull. The chain feels like there is some slack and then it "catches" and you feel the resistance. That has always bothered me on all the of the concept 2 rowers I have used in the past 8 years. It feels almost abrupt and not natural. Since those few inches are during the most powerful portion of the row (your legs), I have always felt cheated. Maybe it's my form, but I think I have it down pretty well. I have never rowed other than kayaks/canoes but I can't imagine there being this "gap" in resistance in water. Apparently the waterrower is better at that which is why it peaked my interest.

Sure. It probably has nothing to do with trying to feel like Frank Underwood. House of Gainz!

I never got into the show but I made it far enough for his wife to get him the rower . Every review I have seen seems to reference him.
