Generator for my 2nd gen

Been wanting to add a 2nd battery and a 2kw inverter in the bed of my 2nd gen

The thought of having to run the big cables, install a switch, isolator, volt gauge, larger alternator etc stopped me from heading forward...

I even purchased the expensive xantrex unit....

I changed my mind and want to just buy a gas generator that will fit in the bed of my truck under the bakflip bed cover and call it a day...

I was looking at the 2000 watt Yamaha and Honda units but they are too tall to fit under my cover

Some of the 1000 watt versions will fit (under 16") but it will limit the power that I wanted....

Any suggestions on what gas generator I should buy?

I would like it for running a microwave to heat up my lunch, power tools while working and possibly a small portable a/c unit while camping (I know 1000 won't cover this)

The specs on the Honda EU2000 show that it's 16.7" tall. That should just fit under your Bakflip, in between the latch rails. If it does, and later you decide you want more power, you can link 2 of them together. The cool thing about this setup is that 1 person can carry everything, versus a large generator that takes 2 people to carry.

 

and the honda EU's are STUPID quiet. We have an EU3000 and it spoils anyone who uses it when they go to use a more normal generator.

 

Yeah, I've heard that in the RV parks, where there's zillion dollar coaches with onboard diesel generators, they'll have a Honda EU generator sitting beside the coach, quietly purring away.

My cop buddy said not to spend the $ getting it because someone will break into my bakflip and steal it by cutting off the plastic handle that my lock it going through....

I wonder if any of the lower priced models will fit...

I'm looking at the height of the "Ryobi" and "AI" models online now, I know some of them use Honda or Yamaha motors at 1/2 the price

If I have to I'll weld a tab to the unit and chain it to the bed

It won't be used much but would be cool to have onboard if I need it

 

Anybody tried the harbor freight version of the Honda 2000?

I've got a Honda 3000, but it's pretty heavy. Plenty of power and super quiet.

 

I agree with Honda. A friend of mine has an eu2000i that he uses in his trailer and it's great - small, light, quiet.

 

If someone knows the Honda is in there, I could maybe see someone breaking in, but if no one knows whats in there, is it parked in that bad of a neighborhood where someone will pry it open just to see whats in there? I'm curious if the cop logic is that no one would steal a Ryobi, or that WHEN it gets stolen, you're not out $1,000. This isn't like putting 15" subs in the back of an '86 Camaro, in plain view.

Unfortunately yes, I do live in a pretty crappy area of Orange County California. One of the crappiest parts....lol

I Had my garage broken into about 10 years ago and they got me for $35k worth of tools and fishing gear...

My cop buddy said that so that I could cut my losses (I already carry $3k worth of work tools back there) he said he's been seeing a lot of tailgate and soft bedcover thefts recently

We all know how easy it is to get passed a bakflip, and having a generator back there that costs $500 instead of $1200 made sense....

I need to quit being lazy and put a pin switch on the tailgate and bedcover for my alarm...

That's pretty cool they made that theft deterrent cover for the handle (I guess it is a big problem) I wonder how much height that adds to the unit as I'm already pushing it...

The Yamaha 2kw looks bad ass and is cheaper than the Honda but it's too tall

 

Another vote for the little Honda. We use them at work on different jobs. They work. I've probably worked with a hundred of them and can't remember a problem with them that wasn't operator error. #1 is people forget to open the vent on the gas cap and the Honda will run 5-10 minutes and sputter and shut down. The second error is people forget to fill it and it runs out of gas.

 

Here's a bunch of them in your area for $600- $800. The $600 one looks pretty abused. I would just start low balling them. First one to take your lowball offer makes a sale. Hopefully they're not stolen.

Over the years everyone I know at the racetrack buys "just as good and as quiet as a Honda". They are not a Honda and aren't as quiet. If quiet is what you want you want a Honda. Those others get sold and they buy a Honda.

Now a HF generator powered by a Honda is not a HONDA generator. This falls into the just as good as a Honda category. Maybe a Honda motor but a HF muffler and none of the Honda noise deadening.

OP has said nothing regarding noise only dimentions. So my recommendation depends on noise. If noise is not a concern buy whatever is cheapest and hope the quality is there over the long run. IF noise is a concern go Honda. Yamaha is making quieter units so they may be in the running but if you get the "quiet" series Hondas there is no question they are the quietest bar none.

I currently am looking to replace my generac with a Honda solely based on noise.

 

Muddinfun, I've been checking CL all day long.

I've found a lot of the adds to be kinda shady, I went to look at a Honda today listed as a private seller and it ended up being a pawn shop, I had them start it and it shut off (overload light) when under the load of a makita angle grinder..

I'm so lucky I didn't just start it and leave...

Noise isn't an issue for me as most of its little use will be on a construction site heating up my lunch or charging my makita cordless batteries....

Still on the search for a reliable used Honda or a cheaper new model that's under 17" tall

 

If you want a nice cooler that fits under the Bakflip, the Coleman xtreme marine pro 100 quart fits real nice in my 2006.

 

Found one that fits in the bed of my truck

Now I need to find a way to secure it

I don't know about a 150 that fits. That would be a really big cooler. The 100 quart will hold way more than I'll ever need.
