Oil Change

My Taco is nearing 5K miles and its time for the first service. Im gonna have Toyota do the works this first time but I want to change my oil after that but I got some questions..

What kind of Oil does Toyota factory use?

How often do you do your own changes?

What kind of Oil should I be using if not the one Toyota uses?

i will start changing my oil every 3-5k depending on how aggressive i drive. i change it with mobil 1 fully synthetic oil. i think toyota comes with conventional oil. but dealers may change it with whatever fits their budget.

 

I dunno what kind of oil they use - probably conventional oil and whatever oil brand they have a contract with at the time

I change mine whenver my maint light comes on - and give or take some time to work it in my schedule. Normally...4500-5K miles.

You can use whatever oil you want to use as long as its the proper oil grade/type as stated in your owners manual. That's totally up to you....

 

Dealership uses dino, but no idea what brand. You can get them to use synthetic if you're willing to pay a lot more.

I use SuperTech full synthetic (Wal-Mart brand) 5w-30, but after taking a verbal lashing here at TW I'll be switching to Mobile 1 synthetic at the next change. Around here you can get a case of 6 1-qt bottles of Mobile 1 full synthetic from Sam's Club for $22.

I change every 5k, on the 5k (10, 15, etc.)

You didn't ask, but I use the Toyota OEM filter. I got a case of 10 of them on Ebay (from a dealership in NC somewhere) for $37.00 including shipping. It's hard to beat $3.70/ea for a filter you trust.

 

I did my oil change very early (2000 miles) to get rid of the break in junk. I did it myself (cheaper) and used Mobil 1 with the Genuine Toyota Filter. A few days ago I got a flyer from my dealer for the 5k maintenance: Conventional Oil$39.95, Durablend Synthetic Oil$49.95, Valvoline Synpower- full synthentic$59.95. I'll take it in to get my tires rotated cuz I have a coupon for that as well. But I'm doing the oil changes myself.

 

i change my oil every 5k and i run either mobil1 or pennzoil platinum, both 5w30, both full synthetic. and i use the mobil1

My last I did myself due to hearing quotes of $70+ for Mobil1. There's an excellent DIY thread that made it easy & cost less than $30 w/ OEM filter.

hey, the oil filter you got from ebay, are they made in japan or thailand?
the first filter ever goes on the truck is made japan, but once u go back to dealers to get another one, it is totally different and different serial #
toyota want to go with a filter made somewhere else and less quality!

 

Is something wrong with fram filters?

I changed mine the first time at 4,000 miles, which was because I was at 6 months. I brought it to the dealer. I am only at 6000 miles now and I am due for my 6 months again at the begining of september and will be doing it myself with mobile 1 synthetic.

 

I just changed the oil on mine. This was the 2nd oil change in 4169 miles. The 1st was at 1205 miles. Yes I'm anal that way.

Anyway, the oil was really black and dirty both times. I use Castrol GTX 5w-30 regular oil and a Toyota YZZ-D3 filter. I had planned to start changing the oil every 5K as recommended but may just stick to my old ways of every 3K.


This truck is so easy to change. Pull the rubber plug off the bottom of the oil filter trap, place a dixi cup under it, and loosen the oil filter a turn. Let it drain a few drops put the plug back on. Underneath, turn the Fumoto oil plug to the drain position and it drops straight in the tub. Come back in 10 min. and close the drain plug, hand tighten a new filter, and add 5.5 qt. of oil and your done. It takes 20 min. tops and this includes vacuuming the AFE air filter as well. I love this truck.
