Hutchinson Rock Monster DOT legal REAL beadlock wheels and 37" tires

Although there are a couple of members running Hutchinson Rock Monsters, there is not a lot of info on these, so I thought I would make a thread here on TW. Most of this is just copy and pasted from my build thread.
For those of you that don't know, Hutchinson makes heavy duty, bombproof beadlock wheels for many military vehicles.

So these are a 2 piece internal beadlock wheel that clamps on to both inner and outer bead without the use of external rings. It uses a large rubber donut that goes inside the tire and keeps both beads tight against the wheels lips. I think there are only a couple of street legal beadlocks on the market. I got them in the Argent color.

There are some great videos on putting these together, so I'm not gonna go into too much detail on that, just some tips. I'm still in the middle of SASing my Tacoma, but these came in, and I thought I'd put them together so its not taking up so much space, and also so that I can keep an eye on them to make sure they are not leaking. Tires are Goodyear MT-R 37x12.5x17 load D

I made this stand so when I step on the wheel, my weight is pushing the wheel against the ground and not just compressing the tire. With the tires spaced off the ground, my weight will just be putting direct pressure on the two sides of the wheel forcing it into the tire and getting the bead closer to being seated.







First thing to do is get the donut into the tire, and pretty centered.

Then shove the inner part of the wheel in, trying to get it in there as far as possible. Blue tape is to line up the groove in the doughnut with the studs so I get the valve stem in the right place. Also, if you want your TPMS to work with these, they mount onto the rubber donut using the hole in that groove. Pay attention to the tire direction and orientation. MTRs are non directional, but do have an inboard and outboard.
I did carefully lube the bead with a little soapy water before inserting the wheel sides. I don't think getting liquid in the tire is a good idea with balance beads.

Lubing up the O-ring with Vaseline. this will help it say in place when you turn it over.

Back of the wheel is on my stand. Gotta stomp on the face to get the 3 long starter studs to protrude enough to get some of those weird locknuts on. If you gonna run dynabeads, get them in before putting on the outer wheel. Hutchinson does not recommend it tho...

Once you close up the gap a little, check to make sure the O-ring is still seated in place.

Here is the locknut. Weird 2 piece thing. I've been a machinist for awhile and have never seen this before.

Threads go all the way down tho.

Put them all on and torque to 100ft lbs in a star pattern. Wife tried, but couldn't get the torque wrench to click 100lbs

Then put these plastic caps over the nuts and studs to make your real beadlocks look like fake beadlocks

In case you were wondering, 37s are a little bigger than 285s

So people keep asking what these things weigh. And I got all kinds of numbers searching.
I weighed all the individual parts.
The face plate. Unsurprisingly since it has the spokes and hub, it weighs the most at 22lbs and 3oz.

The inner wheel, 17lbs 3oz.

Rubber donut, 13lbs 8oz.

Hardware, 1lb 5oz.
Total, 54lbs and 3oz

Plus 10oz or so of dynabeads.
and then wrap it with a 75lb tire!

Anyway, I hope this thread helps someone thinking about Hutchinsons, or introduces someone to them that has never heard of these awesome wheels.

I forgot to mention that these wheels are hubcentric, so they don't need any rings, and they use the factory style/mag lug nuts. I gave my stock lugs away, so I bought a set of Gorilla "the system" lug nuts. Every nut is a wheel lock.

 

Get spare center O-rings. I've blown one out already. Only thing that I don't like is that they only make the center caps in that argent color so if you order the silver or black wheels you will have a mismatched center cap. Not a deal breaker but it is annoying when I have them on. Eventually I'll find a way to dye or paint them. Other than that, I love them. Been wheeling down to 4psi on my 35" ST Maxx tires without issue.

 

The huge o-ring? That thing is rock solid! I'm surprised it blew out. I'll order some spares. Thanks! I can't wait to try crazy low PSI

 

Yeah, the white one. I posted a picture of it on here somewhere. I stupidly ripped the first one by hand when building the wheels because I followed their directions about stretching them and it broke at the rubber weld seam. Now I advise people to find it and then stretch everything else. Have ten of these wheels now and I keep four spare O-rings on hand.

Never did snap the plastic bolt cover caps on. Are they a pain to take off? I ask as I check the torque once a month.

 

I actually only put the caps on one wheel. Took them all off after. Looks cheap, and it rains a lot here, so I worry water will get trapped inside and rust the hardware. At least being exposed I can keep an eye on them. Just need a 1" deep socket and unscrew them.
I didn't stretch the O-ring. I had no problems getting them in. Just greased them up and started from one end and ran it in with both thumbs starting together, then doing a half circle and meeting up at the opposite side. Never popped out either.

 

Took the plastic bolt caps off.

Easier to keep an eye on the bolts and check torque, and I think it looks better.

 

How well did the balance beads work for you???

 

Is your truck a daily driver?

 

Truck is still down since I am finishing up the SAS, but I've driven it around the block a few times and also a quick run on the highway. It seems fine so far, and I'll report back after I get it on the freeway. Technically it's a daily driver, but I work at home

 

Pretty much, either it or an old JDM LandCruiser that up until recently was also rolling on Hutchinsons and 35's.

I was actually asking you guys the same question I'm wanting to get a set of the Hutchinsons and put on my truck but I have a daily commute of about 35 miles round-trip. Also once or twice a year I run over to Phoenix from Santa Barbara as you know it's all freeway And want to make sure that I'm going to be able to send my balance these rims and tires and not just throw away a ton of money

 

There are a couple of others that run these wheels. @MrGrimm has been running them also, and he's probably the first time I have seen these on a taco.

Truck looks great! I might be going the same route as you regarding the solid axle so I will be spending some time reading through your build to get some pointers.
