Background:
With the mods slowly building up and some extra time on my hands, I finally gave in and decided to make a build thread for my trusty 2010 Tacoma DCSB TRD Off Road PreRunner. Due to military orders, my family and I moved to Tucson, AZ from Tokyo, Japan mid December 2016 and desperately needed a second vehicle as my wife was going to start her new job and my kids were going to begin school. I had a couple of days to shop and unfortunately there were no 4x4s in my price range so I settled for the next best thing and had no regrets since. I bought it used January 1 2017 with ~93K miles to her name. It had a leveling kit already installed and also came with a color matched camper shell which made the deal a little better. It has served me well so far and I am lucky to have met a good group of guys that are always willing to help me out if I ever run into a situation where the rear locker doesn't pull through.

Use of Vehicle:
Moving from the concrete jungle to the middle of the Sonoran Desert introduced a rare opportunity for my family and I. We were so used to living in the middle of the towering skyscrapers and fast paced life of Tokyo that the laid back/wide open feel of Tucson was quite welcoming and refreshing. We are going to use this opportunity to finally get to explore the great outdoors and hopefully see the places you see in magazines. I know it will be difficult at times with a 2wd but we'll make it work and making it to our final destination will be that much more rewarding.

Installed my Satoshi Grill on January 21 2017. Bought the mesh grill and lettering from Customcargrills.com. Highly recommend checking them out. Awesome customer service and quick shipping. Directions were easy to follow but I got snagged up during the cutting process. I taped off the cutting area with the recommended width electrical tape and cut along the tape edge but somehow cut to much and there was no where for the side tabs of the mesh grill to attach/glue to. This opened up a new learning opportunity for me as I decided to bondo/paint the missing sides. The final product was pretty rough but the flaws are only noticeable if you're up close in full inspection mode.

 

Installed Bed Reinforcements made by At The Helm fabrication on March 10 2017. I figured this is a necessary mod that needed to be done sooner rather than later due to the possibility of cracking the bed corners when putting additional weight on the bedsides (Camper shell, Bed Rack, RTT, etc). At The Helm fabbed up some very stout and sturdy reinforcements that arrived very quickly after ordering. Instructions were easy to follow. It's good to have some peace of mind knowing my bedsides are safer with these bolted on...... who am I kidding? I really bought them for the bottle openers that were cut into the design.

 

Installed my front suspension on April 2 2017.

While looking for a new suspension setup to upgrade from the leveling kit that was originally installed, I was pretty much 100% set on a brand new Icon stage 4 kit. Right when I was going to pull the trigger, I was scrolling through the 2nd gen buy/sell thread and saw a brand new post for used Icon 2.5" coilovers w/ CDC valving, 700# coils and Billet UCAs for an AMAZING price. The catch was it was a local sale only in Southern California. Luckily it was my sons birthday that weekend so we made a last minute decision to make our way to San Diego to celebrate his birthday at Legoland and pick up the front setup while we were out there. The timing couldn't have been any more perfect.

After making a come up on that awesome deal, I had the coilovers rebuilt by the good people of ADS Racing Shocks located here in Tucson. They were rebuilt in two days and proceeded to sit in my garage for about two weeks. I then came across another awesome deal here on TW for some 14" 650 lb coils up in Phoenix. I quickly made my way up there that weekend and had them installed by the good people of ADS Racing Shocks. (Customer service and quality of ADS products are top notch and my multiple trips to their shop made me finalize my decision on going with their shocks for my rear setup.)

I finally had time to begin the install process April 1 2017 but the lower shock bolt decided to play an April fools joke on me and didn't want to come off for anything! I gave up after about an hour trying a decided to give it another go after a good nights rest. The next morning I woke up and was still running into issues getting this lower shock bolt off. I hit up a few buddies and was given a suggestion by @05tacomabro to give it a few drops of a 50/50 mix Acetone and ATF. Ran to Oriellys to buy the ingredients and cooked it up real quick when I got home, soaked the bolt and 30 minutes later it came off like butter! I'm a believer now and will definitely marinate any bolts I will be removing the night prior.

Thankfully, my buddy @Brindybot came through a few minutes after getting the bolt off and assisted with the rest of the install. This man is a beast when it comes to suspension installs (and anything else vehicle related for that matter) and helped me finish up about an hour later. If it wasn't for him, I probably would still be working on the install right now, 3 days later. lol.

 

Had some rock sliders installed by Avid Off Road on March 30 2017.

Pelfreybilt front bumper installed April 8 2017

My buddy @05tacomabro hosted a mod day at his crib which provided the perfect opportunity to finally install my favorite mod thus far. There were a few projects going on during the mod day. @Brindybot heavily customized a mangled ARB front bumper to fit his 4runner. We flipped my driver side coilover top hat that came upside down after a rebuild and we installed my Pelfreybilt front bumper as well.

I ordered the steel plated front bumper off of @Pelfreybilt's website raw with center hoop during their tax return sale. They advertised a 4-6 lead time which was exactly spot on. I received it a few days short of 4 weeks from when I placed the order. Customer service was excellent and the build and welds on the bumper are top notch! I painted the bumper with Rustoleum bed liner rattle can due to the ease of touch ups after a rough trail.

It was a pretty straight forward install, just needed to trim the front lip of my skid plate and add a few washers onto the mounting screws to have the perfect fit. The added weight dropped my front lift .5" and it's sitting perfect at 24.5" (center of hub to bottom of fender) and the ride is so much more nice. The preload on my Icons is not bad at all. I am running 14" 650lb springs and am showing 5 threads on the passengers side and 7 on the drivers side. Sitting so damn nice. Check the pics and don't forget to sub!

When I first zeroed down on what I'll be using the truck for and how I wanted to look, I spent countless hours and many nights clicking through random build threads across TW and asked a whole bunch of questions on how each mod worked for everybody. Definitely a great site full of information and awesome, informative, members willing to share their knowledge with anybody willing to learn and ask questions. What's the rim size of these wheels?

 

Great thread so far! I'm in the same boat with my truck. Looked hard for a 4wd in the price I wanted to pay but ended having to settle for a Prerunner. Trying to build it up slowly and test its capabilities. Have gotten to some cool places so far with it here in southern California. How have you done on the trails with your truck? Get stuck yet?

Thanks man! I just read your blog post about your buying experience. Sounds exactly like mine! Lol. Lots of searching but couldn't find that steal deal on 4x4! The PreRunner is definitely earning its keep though! Got stuck for the first time two weekends ago when me and a couple buddies got locked in a no trespassing area. We had to make our own trail out and unfortunately it was through some super soft sand. I may have been able to get out on my own if we weren't on a time constraint trying not to get caught. Lol. It definitely surprises me each time I go out. I've been challenging the truck more and more and it keeps on rising to the occasion. The rear locker is definitely clutch to have and I think once I get my winch to provide that false sense of courage, it'll surprise me even more. Gotta say, although I would love to have a 4x4, the competitive nature in me really loves the extra challenge and excitement running a 4x2 provides.

 

@adadandhistruck Prior to getting stuck, this hill was the closest I got to needing a tow but deflating from 20psi to 16psi and a little more skinny pedal made a world of a difference. You can kind of see it in the background but this trail was a looong series of steep inclines and it definitely taught me a lot about the truck and what it's capabilities are.

Lift Measurements Update
After a month of having the Icons on, I decided to measure the lift height to see if they settled a little. I expected maybe 1/2" settling but to my surprise they settled a full inch! For some reason my rears are measuring 1/2" taller?? I don't know what would make the rears taller as I didn't do anything new to them. New measurements are as follows.

-Rear Passenger: 22">>> 22.5"

Still waiting on ADS to finishing building my rear shocks. My Dakar springs and hardware have been sitting in my garage for about a month waiting to get installed! I heard ADS got backed up with some orders so unfortunately I may be waiting longer than the 4 week lead time as advertised. I just hope they're built before my trip to California as we're planning to hit up Anza Borrego for a bit after hitting up Disneyland and Universal Studios later this month.

 

After a some bumps in the road, finally got my rear shocks from the good people of ADS and was able to upgrade my rear suspension! Installed my Dakar leaf pack and shocks all by myself last night/this morning. Lining up the shackle and center pin for the leaf pack is a PITD by yourself. If you have any, I highly suggest asking a friend to assist.
