I want to change out the exhaust on my '06 Taco, but I don't want to mess with performance. I'm going the ricer route for this particular mod and solely focusing on the sound of my truck. I know nothing about swapping out exhausts so is it even worth it for me to only swap the muffler? Whats my best option for swapping? I want my truck to have a low mean growl, but not be loud and obnoxious if that makes sense. Any good suggestions on this? Again I'm totally new to the exhaust/muffler world and looking for any and all advice!

Bilstein 5100's w/ Eibach coil overs in front (set at 3" of lift). Front diff drop kit. Extended Bilstein 5100's in the rear. Deaver 2" AAL in rear w/ axle shims. 285 x 75 r 16 Goodyear Duratracks. Wheelers steelies type B, AFE cold air intake. Sway bar delete. All Pro Apex front bumper (rattle canned Rustoleum primer + flat black). Plasti-dipped emblems. Mud flaps removed.
I'd go with a Flowmaster 50 Series Delta flow. I've got one on my 4Runner with a 22RE and its pretty growly for a 4 banger. I imagine it would sound even better on the 1GRFE (assuming you have the V6).

    Too subjective.
Go to muffler shop, tell them what ur looking for, ask them to select 3or4 mufflers they think will work without telling you the brand, cut off your stock muffler, and clamp on 1 of the mufflers they selected. Start truck, throw rev....shut off

Repeat till you find the sound you like, have it welded in.... pay for it, then ask the brand.

I would've loved to find a place to take or have that much time to do that for me. That said, I went with a delta flow as it is proven to lower the rpm torque peek by 100 rpm on the 2.7. It sounds real deep from 1.5 to 2k rpm and kinda lowers the sound after that so it's not real annoying. After having it for a few weeks it seems to sound better (or could be my ears getting used to it). At first I thought I needed a resonator to lower the sound somewhat but now I'm just enjoying it lol. It's not loud but it's not stock... then again that is why we get new mufflers right?

Bottom line is... if you want deep with minimal to no drone than go with the delta 50

Check out the Flowmaster 40 series. 42541 is the part # on the one I used, it is 2.5" in and out which is close to the stock pipes on the truck. I just cut the old muffler off and clamped the new one on, bought and put on universal hangers. Check my video I made to day on my exhaust I just installed. But read the description to see what I have in it and know it's not going to sound the same as yours will.

What about an FJ cruiser muffler?? They have a pretty decent sounding growl to them. At least my dads does and the muffler appears to be stock.

Sorry for posting on an old thread, but I'm also looking for a 50 series delta flow muffler for my 00 prerunner 2.7. The truck has over 320k miles on it (doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil!) and it looks like the exhaust has been replaced at least once before. I want my muffler shop to just cut the old raggedy muffler out and replace with the flowmaster.

As far as sizing, I've seen other threads recommend the 2.25" ID for 2nd gen 2.7s, but measuring the approximate diameter of my exhaust pipe it looks like 2" OD (haven't seen any specific recommendations for 1st gen). Would putting a 2" or 2.25" muffler on make much of a difference in sound/power if the shop could weld either in?

The rest of the exhaust looks pretty good and is mandrel bent so I don't think it makes sense to spring for a full catback. Thoughts?

I haven't noticed much if any drone, but then again, I always have music going. Not to loud though

I did a muffler only system last month using a Black widow venom 250 muffler. http://www.blackwidowexhaust.com/mu...nter-SKU-BW001-C/p/35648298/category=15730041 They are worth looking into.

I previously had a flowmaster series 50 muffler 1in/2out running split exhaust that came out of the back of the truck. I loved that system and the sound but it rusted and I needed to make another exhaust. I got my exhaust built earlier this month using a Black widow 2.5" Venom 250 muffler and i already have a aFe Stage-2 Si Pro 5R Cold Air Intake System Dry filter installed. Since my old system had rusted I also needed to get stainless steel run for the exhaust system but it follows the factory run.

I really like the sound of the Venom 250 on my truck. The initial firing up sound is aggressive and loud enough but doesn't scare small children. It was 11F this morning while starting the truck in the video. With that said, your neighbors will definitely know when you have started your truck because the exhaust note travels inside the house easily. Just under normal idle while sitting at a light or in a drive through you wont notice it to much, but once you get on the throttle you and everyone around you will hear it. Getting onto the highway or passing anyone puts a smile on my face each and every time.

The biggest thing that I noticed with this muffler compared to the last system that was on my truck is how much "quieter" the Black widow muffler sounds inside the cab compared to outside the truck, It doesn't sound annoying or overly loud. It has some hum at 1500 rpm, so going 35 down the road you might have a little hum but not annoying drone. At 2k RPM while doing 70mph the exhaust is comfortably quiet and easy to drive, but once you bring the motor up to 3200 RPM she stops sounding like a Tacoma and makes me smile. The company Black widow is worth looking into to for sure.

I also have an Afe Cold air intake with a dry filter, with the old exhaust I noticed that after 3k rpm you would loose the sound of the muffler because the intake sound would take over. After having the new exhaust for about a month now the biggest thing that I noticed is a pretty consistant power band and also engine sound. There is no drop of one sound for another. As the RPMs get higher the whole engine system sounds strong and happy.

My vote is for Magnaflow or a TRD Exhaust they both are mellow but come alive when you hit the gas
